Columbus wrestling makes history. District titles for Belen, Miramar and Somerset and more

District champions were crowned in wrestling during the local 1A, 2A, and 3A district tournaments throughout South Florida.

Columbus made history in 3A. Two consecutive titles for Belen Jesuit in 2A. Miramar continues its breakout season in 2A with a district championship, and Somerset Academy-Pembroke Pines won in 1A.

Plus, after a long layoff, Florida Christian School wrestling returned to district tournament action and placed second in 1A.

Columbus sets mark

The Columbus wrestling team, coached by James Husk, won the District 15-3A Championship at Coral Park.

The Explorers dethroned two-time defending district champ Doral Academy and set a school record by qualifying all 14 wrestlers to regionals, which are Friday and Saturday at South Dade.

Breakout season for Miramar

Miramar won the District 15-2A title at Archbishop McCarthy in Southwest Ranches.

The Patriots, coached by Anthony Fernandez, celebrated five individual champions with 13 wrestlers qualifying for regionals at Bayside High School in Palm Bay.

This marks the team’s first district title since 2010.

Belen back-to-back

The Belen Jesuit wrestling team, coached by Francis Aguilar, won its second consecutive district championship.

The Wolverines jumped out to an early lead and never looked back at the District 16-2A Tournament, sending eight wrestlers to the finals with 12 qualifying for regionals.

They were led by Individual district champs Isaac Badell (132), Henry Amador (138), Lucas Amaya (170), and Darian Torres (182), Belen survived a late push by Mater Academy and North Miami to seal the team.

North Miami, coached by John Severe, placed third with three individual champions.

They are Adonis Severe, Gerson Alette and Ndidi Obi. Carly Germain and Shawn Pierre were runners-up, and Charvens Sainteus and Sandro Laguerre each placed third. Semaj Jean-Louis and Davion Cooper finished fourth. Those are North Miami’s region qualifiers.

Florida Christian returns

The Florida Christian wrestling team, coached by Dr. Jason Harrison, finished second to host Key West at the District 16-1A Tournament.

This marked the Patriots first district tournament, after a 12-year layoff, and they qualified 12 wrestlers for regionals at Cardinal Gibbons.
