Columbus boys, Ferguson girls excel in bowling and golf. Plus BCAA golf, Heritage golf and more

Ferguson’s girls and Columbus’s boys were the big winners at the Youth Fair Bowling Tournament at Bird Bowl in Miami.

In the girls’ team competition, Ferguson was the top qualifier, rolling 1850 pins.

In the Baker rounds, Palmetto eliminated Krop, and Ferguson defeated Southwest to set up a showdown that saw Ferguson win the championship.

The champs are Samantha Abreu, Natalia Findeisen, Kaylee Fonseca, Nicole Marin, Samantha Perez, Karla Portillo, Madison Rivero and Emelyn Ramirez. The coach is Marcela Y. Del Rosario.

Thalia Nelson of Krop took home the award for High Set in the morning competition with 460 pins. High Game Honors went to Portillo who rolled 172. She was second in High Set at 408, followed by Palmetto’s Maggie Meltzer at 377 and Southwest’s Anais Segovia at 370.

In the boys’ competition, Columbus was first in the qualifying rounds, rolling 2,846 pins, including an amazing 1,005-pin second game.

In the Baker rounds, Southwest knocked out a strong Ferguson squad, while Columbus eliminated Gulliver Prep.

In the finals, Columbus took the first 3 of 5 wins from Southwest to seal the championship victory.

The champs are Aidan Acevedo, Sergio Alonso, Adrian Bengochea, Chris Ferrer, Alejandro Johnson, Alex Majia, Alec Padilla and Carlos Toca. The coach is Adam Scholer.

Luis Fernandez of Coral Park was the boys’ High Set winner with a 653 pin total. Johnson of Columbus was second at 616, followed by teammate Ferrer at 612. Joshua Munoz of Southwest was fourth at 600. High Game of the day was a 269 by Alonso, a freshman at Columbus.

Golf

Ferguson senior Nicole Hechevarria shot 87 to win the GMAC Girls’ Golf Championship at Redland Golf & Country Club in Homestead.

South Dade sophomore Anisleidy Chavez was the runner-up, just one shot back.

Columbus dominated in the boys’ field. The Explorers placed five in the top six. Senior Hans Risvaer was the individual champion at 69. Senior teammates Christian Figueredo and Andres Atrio tied for second at 73.

Jade Scott of Coral Glades won medalist honors for the second consecutive season, shooting 4-under 67 in the girls’ division of the BCAA Damian Huttenhoff Golf Championships at Country Club of Coral Springs.

The American Heritage-Plantation boys’ golf team placed third of 18 teams at the Honda High School Invitational at PGA National in West Palm Beach on The Champion Course (par 72). The second round was canceled because of inclement weather.

The Patriots were the top Broward/Miami Dade/Palm Beach finisher, scoring 295, one shot behind runner-up Jupiter. Columbus was fourth at 296, and Archbishop McCarthy 10th at 312. Ponte Vedra won at 280.
