Columbia teenager arrested after Sunday shooting on Paris Road

A Columbia teen is in custody following his alleged involvement in a Paris Road shooting that happened Sunday.

Columbia police arrested Dontay Williams, 18, on suspicion of two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, one count of discharging/shooting a firearm at or from a motor vehicle, and one count of first-degree property damage.

Williams was arrested about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 1000 block of Claudell Lane. The shooting took place in the 1700 block of Paris Road. This is in a residential and industrial section of Paris Road near Frost Electrical Supply.

According to court documents filed Wednesday. Someone at a nearby business at the time of the shooting identified Williams and the car he was driving.

They used that information along with other witness statements, nearby video, and social media posts and photos, to believe Williams was the suspect in the shooting.

According to documents the car that was shot at was parked at the scene when the incident occurred. Although identities of victims are redacted in court records, the language in the probable cause statement, along with the initially proposed charges of child endangerment, suggest two children were in the car at the time of the shooting.

As is occasionally the case, the charges that were officially filed Wednesday aren't exactly the same as ones police initially made the arrest for. The child endangerment charges were not filed.

The current charges include one count of first-degree assault, three counts of armed criminal action, and two counts of shooting at or from a vehicle. The assault charge carries the harshest penalty, with a maximum of 15 years in prison if convicted.

Police are continuing to investigate. Anyone with more information is asked to call the department at 573-874-7652 or CrimeStoppers at 573-875-8477 to remain anonymous.
