Colts bring back veteran edge rusher on one-year deal

INDIANAPOLIS — The Colts are bringing back some of the veteran depth pieces the team assembled last year early in the free-agent cycle.

First, Indianapolis brought back hybrid safety-linebacker Ronnie Harrison on Wednesday, and the Colts followed that up by signing edge rusher Genard Avery to a one-year deal, league sources told IndyStar on Wednesday.

Financial details of the deal were not immediately available, but it was likely low-cost.

Avery, a six-year veteran who has played for the Browns, Eagles and Buccaneers, did not play a snap for Indianapolis last season.

Colts news: Re-sign Ronnie Harrison Jr. to add depth at two positions

The Colts signed Avery in the offseason to compete for a roster spot as a rotational edge rusher, and the veteran was pushing for a spot in training camp before suffering a knee injury that forced him to undergo surgery and miss the rest of the season.

Avery has 8.5 sacks in 62 career games, and he can play the LEO spot in defensive coordinator Gus Bradley’s defense. The veteran will likely compete with developmental young players like Isaiah Land and Titus Leo for a roster spot in training camp again.
