Heading into the 2021 season, the Indianapolis Colts were looking towards a fresh start with newly-acquire quarterback Carson Wentz. But on Friday, that new beginning was completely knocked off track.

Less than one week into Colts training camp, Wentz has been listed as out indefinitely with a foot injury.

After training camp practice today, Indianapolis defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus gave a less-than-encouraging update.

“There’s no timetable,” he said, per Colts insider Zak Keefer.

According to NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo, a clearer timetable will be known after Wentz sees a foot specialist in the “near future.”

Update on Colts QB Carson Wentz: He will see noted foot specialist Robert Anderson in the near future, sources tell me and Ian Rapoport,” Garafolo said on Friday. “A firmer timeline for his return will be established at that point. For now, the team is taking solace in Week 1 still being 6 weeks away.”

Unfortunately for the Colts, additional reports have indicated that a Week 1 return for Wentz is unlikely.

According to NFL insider Michael Silver, the veteran quarterback’s injury involves both bone and ligament damage. Wentz reportedly felt a “pop” when the injury occurred during practice on Thursday.

As a result, the Colts are reportedly bracing for a potential surgery.

Wentz was traded to Indianapolis earlier this offseason in a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles

With the former Pro-Bowl QB out, Colts backup Jacob Eason is currently taking starting reps in training camp.
