College Lacrosse Player Dies At 20 After Terrible Accident
A Tufts University women’s lacrosse player has passed away following a tragic accident over the weekend.
Madelyn “Madie” Nicpon, 20, died at Massachusetts General Hospital just one day after falling unconscious at a charity fundraiser on Saturday afternoon.
According to reports from the Rockland/Westchester Journal News, Nicpon was participating in an off-campus hot dog eating contest and choked.
In a statement released to the Journal News, the university said that first responders performed “extensive life-saving procedures” before initially transporting Nicpon to Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge. After being transferred to Massachusetts General in Boston, she passed away on Sunday afternoon.
Approximately 3,000 students and faculty from the 6,000-student university attended a vigil on Sunday night to honor Nicpon’s life. Candles were placed around the junior defender’s No. 2 jersey.
The team shared a lengthy post in remembrance of Nicpon on its Instagram:
“We are beyond heartbroken to share the news of the passing of junior Madie Nicpon — “Scooter”.
Scooter was a true friend and teammate. She truly valued her relationships with her teammates and coaches. Her reach was far beyond our team — she was a true connector on campus and touched every single person she met.
She has and will continue to inspire us every day. We should all strive to live life a little bit more like Scooter did — a person that valued love, loyalty, compassion and friendship.
