Earlier this year, EA Sports revealed that it was planning to relaunch its iconic college football game video series in the near future.

On Thursday, the company reportedly gave a clearer update on the timeline that it is shooting for to release the next edition of the game.

According to 247Sports’ Brandon Marcello, EA Sports is planning to release the next college football video game in the summer of 2023, a full decade after the last edition came out in 2013.

“That’s the hope,” Cory Moss, CEO of Collegiate Licensing Co. told Marcello.

The latest update is exactly in line with what Matt Brown of Extra Points reported would be the case back in March of 2021. At that time, internal documentation from the collegiate trademark licensing company indicated that EA Sports was targeting a July 2023 release.

Many around the college football world have been growing impatient since the day that it was announced the video game series would return. Those feelings continued on Thursday, with many fans and media members expressing their disappointment that the relaunch is still over a year and a half away.

Others were just excited to hear an update that EA Sports is still moving forward with the franchise.

There’s still a lot of unanswered questions regarding the next EA Sports game, considering the college football landscape has changed quite a bit since NCAA Football ’14 was released in July 2013. Among the biggest changes is the NCAA’s decision to finally let student-athletes profit off of their name, image and likeness.

EA Sports addressed that very issue in a statement earlier this summer, prior to the official start of the NIL era.

“We are watching the recent developments regarding student-athlete name, image and likeness very closely,” EA Sports said in a statement. “It’s still very early stages at this point, and we plan to explore the possibility of including players in EA SPORTS College Football. For now, our development team is focused on working with our partners at CLC to ensure the game authentically showcases the great sport of college football and the more than 100 institutions signed on to be featured in our game.”

The official release of the next EA Sports game might still be a distant thought, but stay patient college football fans: NCAA Football is definitely in the works.
