One of college football’s most recognized live mascots, NC State’s Tuffy II, passed away Monday night. The football team and entire athletic department is understandably mourning the loss in the midst of the fall sports season.

NC State Athletics announced the news of the passing Tuesday morning. Tuffy II passed away in his sleep, according to the university’s statement.

“It is with deep sadness that we share that Tuffy II passed away in his sleep last night,” NC State Athletics released in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the Downey family, Tuffy II left a lasting impact on the NC State community.”

Tuffy II was a fan favorite, seen trotting the Wolfpack’s stadium throughout games. He’ll be sorely missed.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Tuffy II,” NC State’s statement reads. “He meant so much to so many people within the NC State community. Our thoughts go out to the Downey family during this difficult time.”

Tuffy II served as NC State football’s live mascot since 2016. He took over for his brother, the first Tuffy, at that time.

Tuffy II was diagnosed with canine dilated cardiomyopathy by the NC State School of Veterinary Medicine. The disease caused the heart to struggle to pump blood properly.

Tuffy II is in NC State football’s heart as the season rolls along. He will be sorely missed, but his legacy will live on.
