Each of the past few years we’ve heard about the same coaches on the hot seat (talking about you Clay Helton and Jim Harbaugh). College football insider Dan Wolken believes one notable head coach should be added to the list: LSU’s Ed Orgeron.

Orgeron won a national championship less than two years ago, thanks to a historic offense led by Heisman winner Joe Burrow. But the Tigers struggled to continue their championship ways last season in the midst of a pandemic.

LSU finished the 2020 campaign at 5-5, which probably doesn’t accurately portray how ugly a season it was in Baton Rouge. And now, some – including Wolken – believe Coach O is on the hot seat.

“No. 1, Ed Oregon at LSU. Orgeron won a national title two years ago. How much good will does that buy you? Not a lot in this environment in college football, especially at a place like LSU,” Wolken said on Thursday. “He has been on the Gene Chizik path, I would say, ever since winning that national championship. Last year was not good. If they continue to backslide … they’re not going to wait to long at LSU to try and right that ship.”

We have a tough time believing LSU would be so quick to move on from Ed Orgeron. He’s become a legend in Baton Rouge. And the 2020 season shouldn’t be used as a barometer.

Orgeron and the Tigers will have an opportunity to silence all their doubters this Saturday. LSU will take on Chip Kelly and the much-improved UCLA Bruins at the Rose Bowl. An LSU win would make plenty of positive headlines in Baton Rouge.

LSU takes on UCLA this Saturday at 8:30 p.m. ET on FOX.
