Colin Farrell Starring in New Detective Drama 'Sugar'

Colin Farrell is on the case! The Irish star, who portrayed Ray Velcoro in Season 2 of True Detective, is playing John Sugar, an American private investigator, in Apple TV+'s new noir detective series Sugar.

The drama, created by Mark Protosevich, is billed as "a contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture, and television history: the private detective story." Kirby Howell-Baptiste, one of the stars of the upcoming show, has teased on Instagram that Detective Sugar "like a lot of people in LA, is not who he seems."

The series, from Academy and Emmy Award-nominated producer Simon Kinberg and Academy Award-nominated director Fernando Meirelles, will premiere on Friday, April 5, 2024.

How will episodes of Sugar be released?

The first two episodes of the eight-episode season will be released on April 5, followed by one new episode every Friday until the last episode drops May 17.

What is Sugar about?

The new drama, according to Apple TV+, follows John Sugar, a detective who is struggling with "personal demons" as he investigates the "mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel." While the P.I. tries to figure out what happened to Olivia, he unearths Siegel family secrets—"some very recent" and "others long-buried."

Is there a trailer for Sugar?

Yes! The official trailer for Sugar was released on March 5, introducing viewers to John Sugar, who describes himself as "one of the good guys" out in California. Though he notes, "But good and bad can be in the eye of the beholder."

At one point, Amy Ryan's character tells John, "You have secrets." The trailer ends with the detective saying, "Someone once said, 'Tip the world on its side and everything loose lands in Los Angeles.' After all this time, is this place starting to turn me upside down?"
