Coastal flood advisory in effect for southern Westchester, Sound Shore Wednesday night

The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood advisory for southern Westchester County and southern Fairfield County, Connecticut starting 11 p.m. Wednesday night into 3 a.m. Thursday morning.

However, meteorologist Dominic Ramunni said that this coastal flooding event is not tied to any excess rain in the area.

"This coastal flood advisory has to do with the high tide," he said. "We have just come out of a new moon cycle and along with some high winds off the coast, the tide is expected to bring in about a foot of inundation to some low-lying areas in Westchester."

There is a 30% chance of showers after 2 a.m. in the early hours of Thursday morning which is expected to dissipate into fog and low visibility conditions for morning commutes around 5 a.m.

Ramunni said there's another flood advisory on its way Thursday afternoon, as heavy rain and a potential thunderstorm is expected after 2 p.m. Expected rainfall amounts from the storm could measure up to half an inch of rain through the evening. Winds could average around 20 to 30 miles per hour, with high gusts potentially reaching up to 40 miles per hour.

The rain is expected to last into Friday morning but should gradually taper off into a sunny afternoon with a predicted high of 62 degrees, leaving the rest of the weekend mostly sunny and breezy.

A slight chance of showers could come Sunday afternoon, but most of the weekend temperatures are expected to average in the high 50s to low 60s.
