Coastal Carolina football hires NC State offensive coordinator Tim Beck as head coach

N.C. State is losing offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tim Beck.

Coastal Carolina University announced Sunday afternoon it has hired Wolfpack offensive coordinator Tim Beck to replace Jamey Chadwell, who is leaving to take the head coaching job at Liberty.

Pete Thamel of ESPN first reported Sunday that Beck would be the new head coach of the Chanticleers, replacing Jamey Chadwell, who is taking over as head coach at Liberty. Beck, 56, will receive a five-year contract that will pay $1 million a year, Thamel reported.

Coastal Carolina officials announced the move just past 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Beck has been at NCSU since January 2020, taking over after a season in which the Wolfpack had co-offensive coordinators in Des Kitchings and George McDonald. The Pack was 4-8 in 2019, leading coach Dave Doeren to make staff changes.

Beck helped develop quarterback Devin Leary into a player deemed to be NFL quality. Leary missed much of the 2020 season with a broken leg, but had 35 touchdown passes and 5 interceptions in 2021.

The 2022 season would be among the most challenging of Beck’s career. Leary was lost to a pectoral injury in early October, and Beck had to prepare quarterbacks Jack Chambers, MJ Morris and then Ben Finley to start games.

Beck came to N.C. State from Texas, where he had been offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. His other college stops include Ohio State, Nebraska and Kansas.
