Coast Guard vessel collides with fishing boat off Puerto Rico, killing one

A U.S. Coast Guard cutter slammed into a fishing boat off Puerto Rico, leaving one person dead and another injured.

The incident unfolded on Monday around 2 p.m., when the 154-foot U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Winslow Griesser and the Desakata, a 23-foot commercial fishing vessel, slammed into each about four nautical miles north of Dorado, Puerto Rico, officials said in a press release.

Crew aboard the Coast Guard vessel managed to pull both men from the water, according to the press release. Carlos was fatally injured in the crash and pronounced dead while his brother seriously injured.

Captain José Díaz, commander of the Coast Guard Sector San Juan, said the National Transportation Safety Board is conducting an investigation aimed at determining what caused the collision.

“We sincerely mourn the passing of Carlos Rosario,” he said.

“We send our most heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and loved ones, and pray they find strength during this most difficult time.”
