They Cloned Tyrone, a Blaxploitation-inspired conspiracy thriller that falls somewhere between Get Out and The Truman Show, is now streaming on Netflix. Starring John Boyega as drug dealer Fontaine, Jamie Foxx as fast-talking pimp Slick Charles and Teyonah Parris as sex worker Yo-Yo, the directorial debut of Creed II co-writer Jule Taylor is garnering some pretty great reviews.

Brian Tellerico at Roger Ebert called They Cloned Tyrone a "striking debut" and a "creative, witty surprise," while Owen Gleiberman of Variety asserted that the film "establishes Jule Taylor as a director of craft and a certain audacious nerve."

Robert Daniels at the New York Times appreciated the movie's "evocatively smoky John Carpenter-esque cinematography" and its stylistic homage to the Blaxploitation era. And like many other critics, he highlighted the three central performances from Jamie Foxx, Teyonah Parris, and John Boyega as the main reasons to see They Cloned Tyrone, writing:

"Even when the dialogue runs long and the film’s frights offer less terror than you’d want in a sci-fi-mystery flick, an inspired Foxx, a subversive Parris, and a ruthless yet melancholic Boyega, who shoulders the bulk of the dramatic weight, retrofit common stereotypes of urban Black life into the rich, dynamic humanism of its reality."

With the film's creative choices, big ideas, and lead cast all being damn-near universally lauded, eyes are already turning towards what first-time director Jule Taylor will do next, with some even speculating that this sci-fi story isn't over yet.

Will there be a sequel to They Cloned Tyrone?

The short answer is: no. The slightly longer answer is: we don't know yet. The Writer's Guild of America and Screen Actor's Guild are both currently striking, leading to an effective shutdown of all productions in Hollywood, and no writers or performers are crossing the picket line to discuss or promote any of their work. So even if there are plans afoot for They Cloned Tyrone Part 2, we won't be hearing about them for a while.
