Cleveland Guardians, Andres Gimenez walk it off to beat New York Yankees
After a "rough day" at the ballpark Saturday, the Guardians beat the New York Yankees 8-7 in walk-off fashion in the 10th inning.
The Yankees took both games in Saturday's doubleheader, 3-2 and 8-2.
It dropped the Guardians' record to 9-5 before Sunday's win, one game behind the Kansas City Royals (10-5) in the American League Central. The Minnesota Twins, the clear favorites in the division entering the season, have gotten off to a so-so start at 6-7.
Here's how Sunday's walk-off win unfolded.
Guardians beat Yankees on walk-off win in 10th inning; Andres Gimenez wins it
That was a wild 10th inning.
Andres Gimenez came through, lining a ball to right field, deep enough to score David Fry from third base. After giving up two runs in the top half of the inning, the Guardians rally to score three in the bottom half to win it 8-7.

David Fry nearly won it with one swing. He drilled a ball high of the wall in left-center, but Josh Naylor was held up at third base at the last second. Dating back to last season, Fry has seemingly come through in so mant big spots for the GUardians.
Down one, with runners on second and third, Will Brennan grounded a ball to second baseman Gleyber Torres, who bobbled it for a second. Naylor broke for home, just beating the throw to tie it 7-7.
With Andres Gimenez up to bat and the winning run on third with one out, the Guardians have again tied it.
Guardians make it 7-6 against Yankees in the 10th
With the free runner on second, Jose Ramirez singled to put runners on the corners and bring the potential winning run to the plate.
Josh Naylor hit a hard-hit ground ball to second baseman Gleyber Torres, who was able to get the out and second, but the Yankees couldn't turn the double play.
Anthony Rizzo hits two-run single in the 10th, Yankees take lead over Guardians
Tyler Beede and the Guardians have ran into trouble in the 10th inning.
In addition to the free runner on second to begin the inning, Aaron Judge was intentionally walked. Giancarlo Stanton then hit a swinging bunt to the perfect spot in the infield to load the bases.
Rizzo then made it all hurt, grounding a ball down the right-field line for a two-run single, putting the Yankees on top 7-5.
It woulda been worse if not for David Fry. Alex Verdugo grounded a ball to Fry, who moved to first base for the 10th inning, and Fry threw to home. Bo Naylor applied the tag for the second out of the inning, and threw to first to get Verdugo. Fry made an impressive dig at first base to scoop up the low throw and pull off a double play.
The Guardians head to the bottom of the 10th down 7-5.
Guardians, Yankees headed to extra innings
Clay Holmes locked down the ninth, and with Jose Ramirez lurking on deck, he struck out pinch hitter Bo Naylor with the potential winning run on first.
A beautiful day has turned to an overcast afternoon with some winds. And the Guardians and Yankees aren't done yet.
Anthony Volpe double with two outs in the ninth ties it up with Guardians
The Yankees were down to their last out against Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase. With a runner on first, Anthony Volpe gave the Yankees new life by hitting a double into the right-center gap that scored Oswaldo Cabrera all the way from first to tie it 5-5.
The Guardians were close to finishing this one, but Volpe got the best of Clase.
Estevan Florial gets revenge on Yankees, home run puts Guardians on top in eighth
The Yankees chose to deal Estevan Florial to the Guardians in exchange for Cody Morris. Yankees reliever Luke Weaver then left a pitch unprotected, and Florial, who earned a roster spot to open the season, crushed it over the right field wall for a solo home run that gives the Guardians a 5-4 lead in the eighth inning over Florial's former team.
And just after Florial finished rounding the bases, a rousing "Yankees suck! Yankees Suck!" chant broke out in right field at Progressive Field. Florial hasn't quite shown the consistency needed at the major league level yet, but, that was a big home run for the Guardians.
Logan Allen's day is done, Guardians and Yankees still tied in seventh inning
The Guardians have also turned to their bullpen. Logan Allen's day is done after 5 2/3 innings. He allowed four runs — all on home runs — and struck out four.
After Cade Smith finished the sixth and Scott Barlow recorded the first two outs of the seventh, Hunter Gaddis entered with two runners on and Aaron Judge up at the plate.
Gaddis, who has had a tremendous start to the season in the Guardians bullpen, struck out Judge to end the inning. While Cleveland has dealt with several pitching injuries, Gaddis has done a fantastic job of propping up the bullpen in a high-leverage role. He still hasn't allowed an earned run this season.
Josh Naylor ties it up with Yankees with RBI single
OK, this one wasn't a home run, but it was still productive.
With two runners on and the Yankees turning to their bullpen with Nick Burdi, Josh Naylor singled back up the middle to tie it up, 4-4, in the bottom of the fifth.
Burdi went on to strike out Ramon Laureano to end the inning with the potential go-ahead run 90 feet away.
Gabriel Arias home run brings Guardians closer to Yankees
The Home Run Derby continues.
Gabriel Arias just crushed a solo home run to the bullpens in center field that again has cut the Yankees lead to one run, 4-3, in the bottom of the fifth.
Only runs via a home run are allowed today, apparently.
Jose Trevino home run extends Yankees lead in fourth inning
It's a Home Run Derby at Progressive Field today.
Yankees catcher Jose Trevino has the third homer of the day overall, his first, as he sent a solo shot that just cleared the 19-wall in left field to put the Yankees up 4-2 in the fourth.
The Yankees and Guardians are just going back and forth hitting home runs each half inning now. Your move, Guardians.
Jose Ramirez home run cuts Yankees lead to one run; See the video
It's a battle of a superstars this Sunday afternoon.
After Judge launched a three-run home run in the top of the third, Jose Ramirez answered with a two-run shot of his own, lining a Nestor Cortes pitch to the Home Run Porch in left field. That cut the Yankees' lead to 3-2.
That was Ramirez's 219th home run with Cleveland as he continues to chase down some of the franchise's biggest names on the all-time list.
Aaron Judge home run crushed off Logan Allen, travels 469 feet; See the video
Logan Allen struck out Aaron Judge in the first inning. In the third inning, Judge did not miss.
With two runners on, Allen threw a first-pitch breaking ball to the inside part of the plate, and Judge absolutely crushed it, sending it at least three-fourths up the bleacher seats in the left field. It traveled an estimated 469 feet and had an exit velocity of 114 mph.
And it put the Yankees on top 3-0 in the third.

After being hit with the comebacker by Volpe, Logan Allen went on to escape the inning unscathed, striking out Aaron Judge en route to a breezy inning — aside from the bruise he likely has from the 103.5 mph ball off Volpe's bat.

Four pitches into today's game, and the Guardians training staff has already been put to work.
Facing Yankees leadoff hitter Anthony Vople in the top of the first inning, Guardians starter Logan Allen was hit with a comebacker off Volpe's bat. It appeared to hit Allen in the arm/shoulder/back. Vople ended up with an infield single.
Guardians trainers came out to check on Allen, who threw a few warm-up pitches and is remaining in the game.
