Cleveland Guardians vs. New York Mets recap; Guards win sixth consecutive game

CLEVELAND — The Guardians made it six consecutive wins Wednesday afternoon with a 6-3 victory over the New York Mets.

It's been a tremendous homestand, as the Guardians won all six games, sweeping the Minnesota Twins and then taking the first two games against Francisco Lindor, in his return to Cleveland, and the Mets entering Wednesday.

The hot streak (which also includes wins in nine of their last 10 games) has the Guardians, under first-year manager Stephen Vogt, at 33-17 through their first 50 games.

Here's how the action unfolded.

Cade Smith gets the save, Guardians winning streak reaches six games with win over Mets

With Emmanuel Clase unavailable, Cade Smith recorded the save (but not before Francisco Lindor doubled off the wall) as the Guardians beat the Mets 6-3 to sweep the six-game homestand.

Kyle Manzardo doubles off the wall, Guardians up 6-3 over Mets

The Guardians have now scored six unanswered runs.

Kyle Manzardo has started to show some signs of life after a rocky opening to his big league career, and his double off the wall in left field has put the Guardians up 6-3 in the eighth inning.

Manzardo also doubled to deep center field earlier this homestand, and his swing has shown the team some encouraging signs.

And with Clase unavailable today, a three-run cushion is more more manageable than a one-run lead.

Jose Ramirez double adds an insurance run for Guardians

There's extra-base hit No. 601 of Jose Ramirez's career, which goes for an RBI double to left-center field that gives the Guardians' lead a bit more padding, 5-3.

Entering Wednesday, Ramirez had a 1.083 OPS since May 5.

Hunter Gaddis, Sam Hentges hold Guardians lead over Mets

The Guardians bullpen continues to deliver as one of baseball's best units in 2024.

With the potential tying run in scoring position both times, Hunter Gaddis in the seventh and Sam Hentges in the eighth both recorded key strikeouts to end the threats and hold Cleveland's one-run lead.

Though after Emmanuel Clase appeared in three consecutive games, the Guardians will have an interesting decision to make when it comes to who pitches the ninth inning in potentially a close game (for now, as Cleveland is coming to bat in the eighth inning).

Rookie Johnathan Rodriguez gives the Guardians their first lead of the day

Johnathan Rodriguez's first career hit comes at the same time of his first career RBI, as his single to right field has given the Guardians a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning.

A key, run-scoring play as your first career hit in the majors makes for a pretty good day for a rookie.

Andres Gimenez crushes three-run home run to tie it against Mets

Through five innings, the Guardians did virtually nothing. And in the sixth, one swing has tied it.

First, Austin Hedges laid down perhaps the greatest bunt in baseball history. That's hyperbole, of course, but with the Guardians collecting only one and struggling to do much of anything against Quintana, Hedges laid down a bunt that rolled perfectly down the third base line and came to a rest in fair territory for a single.

Tyler Freeman followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position, and Andres Gimenez then snapped an 0-for-12 skid by launching a score-tying, three-run home run that just cleared the wall in right-center field.

Just like that, it's a new ballgame.

Jose Quintana allows one hit through five innings against Guardians

Jose Quintana has been cruising against the Guardians lineup today, as Cleveland has totaled just one hit through the first five innings.

Tyler Freeman has two hard-hit balls, but other than that, Quintana has stifled the Guardians lineup. David Fry has the lone hit, a single to left field.

Harrison Bader home run off Triston McKenzie extends Mets lead

After being hit by a pitch last time up, Harrison Bader got his revenge with a solo home run to left field to give the Mets a 3-0 lead over the Guardians.

The Mets have three solo home runs off McKenzie and continue to make hard contact on a regular basis.

Johnathan Rodriguez helps remove a baby bird from Progressive Field at Guardians-Mets game

Johnathan Rodriguez should be credited with an assist in right field.

During Wednesday's game, Rodriguez appears to have helped remove a baby bird from the field of play.

He's only been in the majors for a few days and he's already helping the wild life.

Harrison Bader shows anger after being hit by pitch from Triston McKenzie

Triston McKenzie's next pitch after the McNeil home run was a fastball that hit Harrison Bader, and the latter wasn't pleased.

Bader took a couple steps toward McKenzie and threw his hands up in a "What was that?" type gesture. Umpires got between them, and the matter was de-escalated.

Jeff McNeil lines a home run off Triston McKenzie

The Mets are hitting Triston McKenzie hard today.

Jeff McNeil just lined a home run to right-center field to give the Mets a 2-0 lead. Through the first eight hitters McKenzie has faced, he's allowed four hits, all with an exit velocity of at least 102.8 mph (two home runs, two singles).

Pete Alonso drills home run to give Mets an early lead to the Guardians

You can't miss to The Polar Bear.

Triston McKenzie threw a first-pitch fastball to Pete Alonso that caught way too much of the zone, and it was belted for a solo home run to give the Mets a 1-0 lead two batters into the game.

Triston McKenzie labored a bit in that first round, allowing three hits and also leaving his first pitch to J.D. Martinez over the heart of the plate, though that ball was fouled off. McKenzie threw 27 pitches in that first inning.
