Top storylines for the game
The College Football Playoff Selection Committee has been known to zig where others zag, and that held true Tuesday night. Despite numerous projections below the cutoff line, Clemson came in at No. 4 in the committee’s debut CFP rankings behind No. 1 Tennessee, No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Georgia. Selection committee chair Boo Corrigan said Clemson’s wins at Wake Forest and Florida State and home wins against N.C. State and Syracuse “really did push them over the top” into the initial No. 4 spot ahead of No. 5 Michigan. Also lingering nearby: No. 6 Alabama and No. 7 TCU.
Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei returns to the stadium where he put the college football world on notice as a true freshman with a newfound perspective. Starting in place of Trevor Lawrence, who’d just come off a COVID-19 quarantine, Uiagalelei threw for an opponent-record 439 yards in a 2020 double overtime loss to the Fighting Irish. He struggled mightily as a starter in 2021 (nine touchdown passes vs. 10 interceptions) before turning things around this year … for the most part. Uiagalelei is averaging a career-high 225.4 passing yards per game as a junior and has 22 total touchdowns. But coach Dabo Swinney benched him in favor of freshman backup Cade Klubnik to spark a comeback win over Syracuse. Uiagalelei remains Clemson’s starter.
This is the fifth meeting in eight seasons for Clemson and Notre Dame after they played just twice in the former team’s first 119 seasons of existence. It’s been a memorable 21st-century rivalry so far. The 2020 regular-season matchup between top four teams was an instant classic as well as a preview of the 2020 ACC championship game, which Clemson won. The Tigers and Fighting Irish also dueled in the 2018 CFP semifinals and in 2015 amid hurricane conditions at Memorial Stadium – both Clemson wins – and will play each other again in 2023 when Notre Dame visits Death Valley.
The Fighting Irish started 0-2 under rookie coach Marcus Freeman, and that very well could’ve been 0-3 if California corralled a too-close-for-comfort Hail Mary in Week 3. Since then, though, Notre Dame’s been much stronger with wins in four of its last five games. The Fighting Irish have road/neutral-site wins over then-No. 16 BYU, UNC and then-No. 16 Syracuse. Their 45-32 win against the Tar Heels looks especially impressive, given that UNC hasn’t lost a game since and debuted at No. 17 in Tuesday’s initial CFP rankings. Even with a puzzling home loss to Stanford mixed in, Notre Dame’s playing far closer to its potential than before — and that’s concerning for Clemson.
Clemson vs. Notre Dame players to watch
Clemson RB Phil Mafah: With fellow backup running back Kobe Pace expected to miss another week, can Mafah spell starter Will Shipley as well as he did against Syracuse? The sophomore had a season-high 18 carries and 94 yards against the Orange.
Clemson LB Trenton Simpson: A semifinalist for various national awards, Simpson has started all eight games for Clemson at weakside linebacker and leads the team with 50 tackles. He’ll be a crucial counter to a strong Notre Dame run game.
Notre Dame QB Drew Pyne: Pyne lost a battle for the Fighting Irish’s starting QB position but got it back when Tyler Buchner suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 2. He’s been steady enough with 13 touchdowns and four interceptions but hasn’t been asked to throw the ball a ton (170.4 passing yards per game).
Notre Dame TE Michael Mayer: Mayer was solid against Clemson as a true freshman and remains one of the best tight ends in the country as a junior. Despite the quarterback change, he has 47 catches for 580 yards and six touchdowns.
