Clemson weather forecast for Saturday
The forecast looks OK, all things considered. There’s a 30% chance of rain, mainly before 10 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Expect mostly cloudy conditions with game temperatures in the low-60s and upper-50s.
Top storylines for the game
Clemson officials remain in close contact with campus safety personnel regarding Hurricane Ian, which is projected to bring heavy rainfall to upstate South Carolina starting Friday and going into the weekend. As of now, the Clemson-N.C. State game will proceed as scheduled. Clemson and N.C. State both hosted (and won) home games against Notre Dame amid hurricane conditions in 2015 and 2016, respectively.
Clemson has what one player described as “a little bit more juice” for this year’s iteration of the Textile Bowl after unranked N.C. State beat the Tigers 27-21 in double overtime last season. That was N.C. State’s first series win since 2011 and sent the Wolfpack on an upward trajectory while booting Clemson out of the College Football Playoff race.
Behind an in-rhythm, red-hot quarterback in DJ Uiagalelei, Clemson’s offense is producing at a historic mark. The Tigers have 175 points this season, tied for the second most through four games in school history (186 in 2000). Can they keep it going Saturday against what’s comfortably the most talented defense they’ve seen to date?
On the flip side, Wolfpack quarterback Devin Leary was lights out against Clemson in 2021 with 238 passing yards and four touchdowns, including a perfectly placed game-winner in double overtime. The preseason ACC Player of the Year now faces a banged-up Tigers secondary that’s been prone to coverage busts and penalties (see: Wake Forest game). With time in the pocket, that’s a mismatch for Leary.
Clemson vs. NC State players to watch
Clemson TE Davis Allen: The 6-foot-6 senior, one of many capable pass-catchers on this Clemson offense, is coming off his best game of the season. He caught four passes for 36 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning 21-yard score from Uiagalelei in double overtime.
Clemson DT Tyler Davis: Davis was impactful — and clutch — against Wake Forest after missing Clemson’s previous two with injury. He had a tackle for loss and a sack on Wake Forest’s last drive of regulation (a punt) and a TFL and pass breakup on Wake Forest’s last drive of overtime (a game-ending turnover on downs).
NC State QB Devin Leary: The Wolfpack’s ACC championship hopes rest on the shoulders of Leary, the preseason ACC Player of the Year. After a rocky opener against East Carolina, he’s played with efficiency and excellence and was 32 of 44 for 320 yards and four touchdowns against UConn.
NC State LB Drake Thomas: Thomas is a fiery player, veteran leader and first-team all conference talent for a deep Wolfpack defense. He leads N.C. State with 24 tackles this season.
