Top storylines for the game

  • Clemson’s College Football Playoff path is no longer a simple “Win And In.” A 21-point loss at Notre Dame has that kind of impact. The Tigers have to win out and hope for some shake-ups ahead of them. That manifested itself slightly on Tuesday, as Clemson moved from No. 10 to No. 9 in the CFP Top 25 after beating Louisville while Oregon dropped from No. 8 to No. 12 after losing to Washington. Clemson’s best late-season résumé booster is a win against No. 13 UNC, which looms in the ACC title game.

  • Saturday is Senior Day for Clemson. The Tigers are planning to honor 20-plus players who, in their four-year careers, have gone 43-7 and 24-0 in Memorial Stadium. Prominent honorees include tight end Davis Allen, defensive tackle Tyler Davis, defensive end K.J. Henry, cornerback Sheridan Jones, left tackle Jordan McFadden and kicker B.T. Potter. (Some players have remaining eligibility.) Missing is quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, who is graduating but is undecided on his Clemson future.

  • Head coach Dabo Swinney offered updates on numerous Clemson injuries throughout the week. Starting right guard Walker Parks (concussion) will play against Miami. Starting linebacker Trenton Simpson (ankle) and starting receiver Beaux Collins (shoulder) are day to day. Running back Kobe Pace (ankle) could also return after a five-game absence. Safety Tyler Venables (hamstring) and receiver/punt returner Will Taylor (minor knee surgery) are out a couple of weeks. Defensive back Malcolm Greene (groin surgery) is out for the year. And Mason Trotter, who started seven games along Clemson’s offensive line in 2021 but hadn’t played in 2022, is medically retiring from football with a back injury. He’ll transition into a student coaching role.

  • On the Miami side, coach Mario Cristobal is understandably remaining coy about his starting quarterback Saturday. Reigning ACC Rookie of the Year Tyler Van Dyke entered the year as Miami’s starter but has missed two of the last three games with a right shoulder injury. True freshman Jacurri Brown started in place of Van Dyke last week and led the Hurricanes to a win against Georgia Tech. Van Dyke is a talented passer who’s been inconsistent this year, while Brown offers serious dual-threat ability.

Clemson vs. Miami players to watch

  • Clemson WR Cole Turner: This might be the week the Tigers roll out Turner, a speedy true freshman whose four games they’ve been “holding” until the end of the season. The brother of former Clemson All-American safety Nolan Turner, Cole could contribute on offense and/or special teams, per Swinney. Turner will maintain his redshirt this season.

  • Clemson LB Trenton Simpson: Clemson survived a game without its starting Will linebacker but is happy to welcome Simpson, a junior, back into the fold. In nine games (all starts), he has 60 tackles, five QB pressures and three pass breakups.

  • Miami QB Jacurri Brown: With Van Dyke’s status up in the air, Brown’s in position to start again for Miami. At 6-foot-4, he’s been a dangerous and tough to tackle scrambler: Brown has 32 carries for 151 yards (4.7 yards per carry) in his last two appearances.

  • Miami S Kamren Kinchens: Kinchens tied a school record with three interceptions against Georgia Tech and returned one 99 yards for a touchdown. Now the sophomore faces Clemson quarterback Uiagalelei, who’s been more turnover prone as of late.
