Clemson vs. Louisville odds
Clemson is a consensus seven-point favorite against Louisville, according to VegasInsider.com. The Tigers have been favored in six of seven all-time meetings with the Cardinals, per Odds Shark, including by 3.5 points on the road last year.
The only betting exception: 2016, when No. 5 Clemson and Deshaun Watson upset No. 3 Louisville and Lamar Jackson 42-36 at Memorial Stadium as a one-point home underdog.
As of Thursday morning, bettors have placed 70% of their money on Louisville to cover the seven-point spread, per VegasInsider. Clemson is 4-5 against the spread this season and 1-3 at home, while Louisville is 6-3 ATS and 2-2 ATS on the road.
Weather forecast for Clemson, SC
Clemson should see minimal effects from Tropical Storm Nicole on Saturday. “Gusty winds and heavy rainfall are expected” Thursday into Friday, according to the NWS Forecast Office for Greenville-Spartanburg, but Weather.com projects a mostly clear weekend.
The current Saturday afternoon forecast for Clemson is 69 degrees, partly cloudy skies and a “slight chance of a rain shower,” according to Weather.com.
Top storylines for the game
Clemson’s chances of advancing to a seventh College Football Playoff in eight years took a big hit last Saturday. A 35-14 loss at Notre Dame, the program’s worst loss to an unranked opponent since N.C. State in 2011, prompted the CFP Selection Committee to drop the Tigers six spots from No. 4 to No. 10 in Tuesday’s rankings. Clemson now has a 27.5% chance to make the four-team field, per ESPN’s Football Power Index. Now, the Tigers probably need to win out and finish 12-1 with an ACC title to have a shot — and even then, they’d have to count on slip-ups from numerous teams ranked above them.
Speaking of the ACC championship: Clemson has already clinched its spot in Charlotte but can win the Atlantic Division title outright Saturday. Syracuse’s loss to Pittsburgh last week gave every team in the division outside of Clemson at least two losses. And the Tigers, of course, hold head-to-head tiebreakers over those two-loss teams (Syracuse and N.C. State). Coaches and players made it clear this week they want to win the title rather than tie for it. A win over Louisville (or Miami next week) would do just that.
After a stellar seven-game start, Clemson starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei has been replaced in the second half of consecutive games with his freshman backup, Cade Klubnik. Head coach Dabo Swinney said after the Notre Dame loss Clemson would “evaluate everything” at quarterback. He added this week Clemson needs to manufacture better opportunities for Klubnik, whose last two appearances came while trailing by 11 points against Syracuse and by 14 points against Notre Dame inside his own 10-yard line — both in the second half. Perhaps Klubnik gets an earlier series this Saturday?
Clemson is 7-0 against Louisville ... but it’s a dramatic 7-0. Four of seven meetings have been decided by six points or fewer, including last year’s matchup, when Clemson outscored Louisville 13-0 in the fourth quarter for a road win at Cardinal stadium. At ACC Kickoff in July, Louisville quarterback Malik Cunningham said the loss “haunts me every day,” adding: “That one definitely is double circled, for sure. When we see them again, it’s going to be a different outcome.”
Clemson vs. Louisville players to watch
Clemson WR E.J. Williams: Williams played 22 snaps, one of his highest totals this season, after starter Beaux Collins got hurt against Notre Dame. Collins won’t play against Louisville, offering more opportunities for Williams (six catches, 61 yards).
Clemson CB Jeadyn Lukus: Sheridan Jones and Nate Wiggins continue taking the majority of reps at cornerback, but Swinney said Lukus, a true freshman from the Greenville area, has practiced well enough to take over a backup spot.
Louisville QB Malik Cunningham: Who else could you put here? Cunningham is the dynamic veteran signal caller who makes Louisville’s offense go. He has 19 total touchdowns and 541 rushing yards in eight games and will play through an injury on his non-throwing left hand this weekend against Clemson.
Louisville RB RB Tiyon Evans: A Hartsville, South Carolina native who played at a JUCO and Tennessee before landing at Louisville, Evans had his second straight 100-yard game last Saturday against James Madison. He averages 6.7 yards per carry.
