Top storylines for the game

  • Sure, it was FCS opponent Furman. But starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei still showed major progress in his second game of 2022. He was 21 of 27 for 231 yards and two touchdowns while setting career highs in quarterback rating (166.7) and completion percentage (77.8%). Clemson also scored touchdowns on his first five drives. Certainly not the worst performance to take into a Week 3 game.

  • He’ll be on a “pitch count,” but expect to see freshman wide receiver Adam Randall make his Clemson debut. The former four-star recruit from Myrtle Beach High earned the nickname “Baby Julio” in spring practice for his potent combination of size (6-foot-2, 230 pounds) and speed. His rapid recovery from a torn ACL in April has been rather remarkable, and head coach Dabo Swinney is bullish on his talent.

  • Nobody in Clemson’s building was happy with last week’s defensive performance against Furman, which Swinney described as lacking “juice” and flat-out disappointing. Coordinator Wes Goodwin’s unit now faces a Louisiana Tech air raid offense that’s averaging 336 passing yards and 429 total yards a game. A blowout win over FCS Stephen F. Austin certainly boosts those numbers, but it’s still a good challenge for a Clemson unit vowing to clean up its tackling and play tighter pass coverage.

  • Clemson debuted a number of upgrades at Memorial Stadium last week against Furman. But a 3:30 p.m. kickoff didn’t make for the best atmosphere when it came to the new LED lighting and spotlight functions at the venue. With an 8 p.m. kickoff this week, Clemson has a chance to truly flex its pregame and midgame upgrades for fans.

Clemson vs. Louisiana Tech players to watch

Clemson WR Beaux Collins: Collins is quickly establishing himself as the top 2022 option for Uiagalelei, his former Los Angeles high school teammate. Through two games, the 6-3 sophomore has a team-high 111 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns.

Clemson DT Ruke Orhorhoro: Already productive this year with 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack, Orhorhoro may be pressed into further action if fellow defensive tackle Tyler Davis, who missed last week with injury, can’t play Saturday. He’s one of the team’s freakiest athletes.

Louisiana Tech WR Cyrus Allen: A former three-star recruit from New Orleans, true freshman Allen had five catches for 121 yards and two touchdowns in his college debut against Missouri. He ranks third in receiving yards per game (60.5) among FBS freshman receivers.

Louisiana Tech LB Tyler Grubbs: The Bulldogs’ most productive tackler had 99 stops in 2020 and 94 in 2021. He entered 2022 with the second best tackles per game average among active FBS players (8.91) and has 16 tackles in two games this season.
