Top storylines for the game
Injury report: After facing a serious injury bug for most of 2021, Clemson’s in a good spot entering its 2022 season opener, per Swinney. Only two players on the Tigers’ two-deep depth chart will miss the Georgia Tech game: defensive end Xavier Thomas (foot) and wide receiver Adam Randall (recovering from torn ACL in spring). Both players are expected to return later this season.
Coordinator debut: Two days after Virginia’s Tony Elliott and Oklahoma’s Brent Venables make their coaching debuts, their Clemson replacements will do the same. First-year offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter and first-year defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin both coached in the Cheez-It Bowl, but Monday marks their first chance to put a true mark on their units after a full offseason slate — on a national stage at that.
A new face: Clemson enters Monday with one true freshman starter: Blake Miller, whose preseason performance was enough to slide Walker Parks over to right guard to make room for the towering Miller at right tackle. Miller’s high school coach describes the former four-star recruit from Ohio as a cerebral player with a mean streak.
Modified sell-out: While Georgia and Oregon will play in Mercedes-Benz Stadium’s full 72,000-seat arrangement, Clemson-Georgia Tech will only seat 45,000 fans. Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game organizers said GT pitched the set-up after using it last year against UNC.
Clemson vs. Georgia Tech players to watch
Clemson QB DJ Uiagalelei: Uiagalelei, Trevor Lawrence’s successor, struggled as a full-time starter last year (nine touchdowns, 10 interceptions) and now has a talented backup in freshman Cade Klubnik. Can Uiagalelei get off on the right foot on national television?
Clemson DL Bryan Bresee: A former No. 1 overall recruit, Bresee was the 2020 ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year before tearing his ACL four games into his sophomore season. He returns as a junior with serious NFL Draft hype.
Georgia Tech QB Jeff Sims: Much like Uiagalelei, Sims is hoping for a third-year breakout. The dual-threat quarterback led Georgia Tech in total offense (1,840 yards) last year despite playing essentially six games. He has 10 career rushing touchdowns.
Georgia Tech RB Hassan Hall: Hall, a graduate transfer, offers GT a solid veteran presence at running back. He appeared in 42 games across four seasons at Louisville and had 1,299 rushing yards and 13 total touchdowns. He’s also a strong kick returner.
