Clemson vs. Furman Vegas odds

Few oddsmakers offered a Clemson-Furman betting line, considering it’s an FBS-FCS matchup. WynnBET Sportsbook did, though, and tabbed Clemson as a 44.5-point favorite.

Top storylines for the game

  • Clemson’s ground game was far from elite against Georgia Tech. The Tigers rushed 40 times for 119 yards (3.0 yards per carry), were stuffed in a number of short yardage situations and only got one carry of 10-plus yards by a running back all night (Will Shipley). With a clear talent advantage over Furman in the trenches, can this be a get-right game for Clemson’s O-line, branded in camp as a position of strength?

  • The Tigers’ quarterback conundrum — though they wouldn’t publicly call it that — will continue with backup Cade Klubnik again expected to get snaps against an inferior opponent. The true freshman’s sole series in relief of junior starter DJ Uiagalelei on Monday night went about as well as imagined and caught the eyes of many nationally. It’s a safe bet Klubnik gets more than one series against the Paladins. Buckle up.

  • This is Clemson’s sole game against an FCS opponent. As such, it’s a great chance for freshmen outside of the two-deep depth chart to see their first career snaps. Players such as Klubnik, tackle Blake Miller, receiver Antonio Williams and linebacker Wade Woodaz all played against GT and will be factors this season. For other freshman scholarship players and walk-ons, Saturday could be a lot of fun.

  • One off-field storyline to follow Saturday: Clemson is debuting a number of upgrades at Memorial Stadium, including the eighth-largest video board in the country and a revamped lighting system. The latter component will be even more prevalent in Clemson’s Sept. 17 home game against Louisiana Tech, which kicks off at 8 p.m.

Clemson vs. Furman players to watch

  • Clemson running back Will Shipley: The dynamic sophomore turned 11 touches into 56 total yards and two short rushing touchdowns on Monday. He was Clemson’s most efficient runner on a night where, as previously mentioned, Clemson’s run game was far from perfect.

  • Clemson defensive end Myles Murphy: The former top five national recruit and projected first-round NFL Draft pick was quiet on Monday, registering one pass breakup, but is primed for a big 2022 season after leading Clemson in sacks (seven) and tackles for loss (14) in 2021.

  • Furman quarterback Tyler Huff: Huff earned Furman’s starting job after transferring from Presbyterian College and was efficient in his debut against Division II North Greenville. He completed 10 of 12 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns and also had a 56-yard touchdown run as Furman racked up 456 first half offensive yards in a 52-0 win.

  • Furman tight end Ryan Miller: A two-time FCS All-American, Miller opened his season with four catches for 85 yards and a touchdown against North Greenville. The preseason All-SoCon pick had 749 receiving yards and four touchdown catches of 50-plus yards last year.
