Top storylines for the game

  • This isn’t the unranked Florida State program of years past. Yes, the Seminoles are on a two-game losing streak. But those losses have come by a combined 12 points to Wake Forest and N.C. State, the current No. 14 and No. 15 teams in the AP Top 25. FSU picked up thrilling wins against LSU and Louisville earlier this season en route to its first top 25 ranking since 2018. The Seminoles were sixth among teams receiving votes this week, and that’s reflected in the point spread, Clemson’s closest of the season (-3.5).

  • Coach Dabo Swinney wasn’t just being optimistic when he said Clemson could be as close to full strength as it’s been all year against FSU. Starting cornerback Sheridan Jones remains day to day, but star defensive tackle Bryan Bresee (non-football medical condition) has been cleared to return after missing two games. Safety R.J. Mickens, safety Tyler Venables and defensive back Malcolm Greene are also healthy. Clemson will be able to deploy essentially every player on its two-deep defensive depth chart.

  • Clemson is playing an ACC Atlantic Division opponent for the fourth consecutive week and can further solidify its path to the conference title game with a win over FSU. In the conference’s final year of a divisional structure, Clemson sits atop the Atlantic at 4-0 in ACC play and already holds tiebreakers against N.C. State and Wake Forest. The Tigers could add Florida State and No. 18 Syracuse to that list before their Oct. 29 open week.

  • In a fun recruiting sidebar, four-star 2023 offensive tackle Zechariah Owens will be in the stands Saturday night on a Florida State visit after decommitting from Clemson earlier this week. He’s the No. 191 recruit in the class and had been verbally committed to Clemson for three months. FSU has already beaten out Clemson for one 2023 recruit in top 100 defensive lineman Keldric Faulk.

Clemson vs. FSU players to watch

  • Clemson running back Phil Mafah: The sophomore, who had a season-high 36 rushing yards against BC, becomes an even more important rotational player behind Will Shipley going forward. Clemson’s other backup running back, Kobe Pace, will miss at least four weeks with a high ankle sprain.

  • Clemson defensive end Xavier Thomas: After missing Clemson’s first five games with a foot injury, the dynamic Thomas returned against Boston College and recorded two sacks and a forced fumble on just six snaps.

  • Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis: Travis is coming off his least efficient game of the season (two interceptions against N.C. State) but his best rushing performance, too (108 yards with a long of 71). That’s a nod toward his consistent playmaking ability in one way or another. He’s the player who makes FSU’s offense go.

  • Florida State defensive back Jammie Robinson: Robinson, a South Carolina transfer and former all-freshman SEC pick, is once again thriving for Florida State. The versatile 5-foot-11 defender has 43 tackles, three pass deflections and a pick this season.
