Clemson University student killed when ejected from vehicle during crash, SC officials say
A Clemson University student was killed early Sunday morning when she was ejected from a vehicle during a crash, South Carolina officials said.
Caroline Deer was airlifted to a hospital where she died, according to the Pickens County Coroner’s Office. The 20-year-old was from Mt. Pleasant, the coroner’s office said in a news release.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 12:35 a.m. on Old Stone Church Road, near Ridgecrest Drive, according to the release. That’s in Clemson, about a mile from the Clemson University campus.
Deer and another person were in the vehicle that ran off the road and flipped over, the coroner’s office said.
Deer was ejected during the crash and was airlifted by helicopter to a Greenville hospital where she died, according to the release.
The other person in the vehicle was also taken to an area hospital before being treated and released, the coroner’s office said.
There was no word whether Deer or the other occupant was driving, or if either was wearing a seat belt.
Information about what caused the wreck was not available, but the crash, as well as Deer’s cause and manner of death, continues to be investigated by the coroner’s office and the City of Clemson Police Department.
An autopsy has been scheduled, according to the release.
Deer was a junior genetics major, according to a report from The Tiger — Clemson University’s student newspaper. She was a member of Clemson’s spring 2023 Dean’s List (for students with a minimum 3.5-grade point average), according to the university.
Through Wednesday, 231 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 999 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least six people have died in Pickens County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 18 deaths reported in the county in 2023, DPS reported.
