The SEC plucked Oklahoma and Texas out of the Big 12; it’s plausible it could do the same with Clemson and the ACC.

Marc Ryan of ESPN Upstate reported on Monday that Clemson has reached out to the SEC in an attempt to join the conference.

“Per a reliable source, Clemson+Florida State have reached out to the SEC about joining the conference,” Ryan said on Twitter. “The SEC is concerned that streaming numbers for Clemson+Florida State don’t bring what Oklahoma+Texas do.”

Are the rumors true? Is Clemson seriously considering leaving the ACC for the SEC? The Tigers denied the report in a statement to Grace Raynor of The Athletic.

“There is no truth to the report that Clemson University has been in contact with the Southeastern Conference regarding membership,” a Clemson spokesperson told Raynor via Twitter.

Well there you have it. Clemson isn’t leaving the ACC for the SEC. What a relief.

College football can’t afford for every powerhouse to simply leave their respective conference and join the SEC. It’d ruin the sport.

The SEC is strong enough. It has Alabama, Oklahoma, LSU, Georgia and Texas, among others. Adding Clemson or Florida State is unnecessary.

If anything, the Clemson-to-SEC rumors confirm the changing of the sport. College football is moving toward becoming a minor-league type system. Players are getting paid for their NIL. The College Football Playoff is on the verge of expansion. And Juggernauts are trying to team up with the strongest conferences.

It’s been quite a year within the college football world, and the season hasn’t even started yet.
