'Classist and disgusting’: AOC rips Trump for mocking her college degree

New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez threw the book at President Trump on Monday for making fun of her college degree while trying to woo blue-collar voters in Pennsylvania.

Trump took the cheap shot at the Democratic congresswoman during a campaign rally in rural Lititz as part of a rant against her advocacy for a carbon-free economy, telling his supporters sarcastically, “She did go to college, right?”

Ocasio-Cortez said it was ironic for Trump to suggest that people without college degrees are inferior.

“Plenty of people without college degrees could run this country better than Trump ever has,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “As much as GOP cry about ‘elites,’ they’re the ones who constantly mock food service workers, people without degrees, etc as dumb. It’s classist and disgusting.”

Ocasio-Cortez, a cum laude graduate of Boston University who worked as a bartender in Manhattan before being elected to Congress in 2018, said she has made it a point to hire people without degrees to staff her congressional office. She said they have done “incredible, effective and strategic work."

“The more college costs soar, the more degrees become a measure privilege than competence,” she wrote. “Our country would be better off if we made public colleges tuition-free and canceled student loan debt.”

Trump delivered the AOC-bashing pitch to Pennsylvanians while barnstorming through the critical battleground state for three back-to-back rallies as Election Day loomed just eight days away.

The president is hoping to attract the same white, working-class voters that propelled him to victory in Pennsylvania in 2016, though polling has shown his support slipping with that demographic.
