Class B baseball: Fort Cobb-Broxton tops Calumet, wins fourth straight title in two years

SHAWNEE — Blaine Davis recalls searching for answers in the dugout at Shawnee High School two years ago.

Fort Cobb-Broxton was coming off a loss in the Class B state championship game to Roff. The sour feeling of defeat is one Davis still dreads to this day.

"They beat us in basketball and baseball that year at state, and I couldn't understand it," Davis said. "From that point on, I wanted to do anything I possibly could to win."

The Mustangs did just that the very next year, evoking their revenge on Roff by winning the rematch in the state title game.

Davis embodied that same desire for victory as he took the mound ahead of Fort Cobb-Broxton's 2-1 win over Calumet in Saturday's Class B state championship. The win also gives the program its fourth consecutive title after winning the past two fall tournaments.

Davis, a Seminole State signee, earned the win in his final game with the program, giving up one run in all seven innings while striking out six batters.

"Roff created the team that you see today," Davis said. "They made us mad and hungry enough to want to be better. But the plan for me was to just throw strikes today. We've got one of the best defenses in the state without a doubt, so they let me work, and I let them work."

The Mustangs got on board in the first inning after sophomore Eli Willits slid across the plate to score on a wild pitch. Freshman Kaleb Crowell got in the mix next, crushing a line drive to center field and bringing in runner Blaine Bellamy.

Although Davis allowed an RBI single from Calumet junior Kyler Thiessen in the top of the sixth, the dominant Fort Cobb-Broxton defense shattered any hopes of a Chieftains comeback.

"It's easier to play when you score first because it kind of takes a little pressure off of us," Fort Cobb-Broxton coach Dale Bellamy said. "We always stress the same thing about getting off to a good start. The kids worked for it, though. They watched the ones before him, and I think they were inspired by our tradition."

The Mustangs (24-6) won their third spring state championship in the last four years. They won their last 13 consecutive games by an average margin of nine runs.

When hired as coach at Fort Cobb-Broxton in 2011, Bellamy envisioned bringing a state title to his alma mater. He remembers winning a state title as a player and has since added to his legacy by helping bring the program's seventh trophy home.

"Fort Cobb-Braxton will always hold a special place in my heart," Bellamy said. "When I was a youngster here, there were coaches around that I envied. I just wanted to be like them. Ultimately, it's all about the kids, so it's good that I get to be along for the ride."
