Mustang girls win first track title

Coach Shannon Atkinson had a message for his Mustang athletes as he took over the Broncos’ program following last season.

Atkinson had arrived from Southmoore and brought with him a clear outlook on how things were going to be.

“I told them in the beginning, ‘We’re going to be a God-driven team. And that’s just the bottom line,’” Atkinson said.

Atkinson, a former OU All-American sprinter, has been a coach for 27 years in high school and college and established a reputation as one of the state’s best, but a championship had eluded him.

That was until Saturday.

After finishing with 122.21 points, the Mustang girls claimed the Class 6A title, the Broncos’ first track championship in school history.

The Mustang girls placed ahead of Jenks, which had 99 points, and had three girls who claimed individual championships.

Senior Emily Cloutier won the pole vault title Friday, clearing 12 feet, 8 inches. She had a stellar year and broke the state record at regionals as she cleared 13-2.

On Saturday, junior Kassidi Watkins broke the Class 6A state meet record in the long jump (20-1.50), while Atkinson’s daughter — junior Jordan Atkinson — won the 100-meter dash (11.74 seconds) and 200 (23.75).

Watkins and Jordan Atkinson also helped Mustang win the 4x100 (46.67), along with senior Lauren Coleman and sophomore Kamyah Penn.

Watkins is now a two-time state champion in the long jump. She won the championship as a freshman and placed fifth last year.

“I was expecting it with the way I jumped this year,” Watkins said of breaking the state meet record. “I was really hoping to jump the (overall) state record, but I was very happy with my consistency."

Jordan Atkinson has now won three state titles in the 100, but this was her first championship in the 200.

“Things went completely as I expected to be honest,” she said. “This is what I have been praying for for a long time. It’s what God has put in my heart and so I’m just so thankful that He really let His plan shine through me and my team. I’m just so grateful for this whole day.”

Jordan Atkinson’s move from Southmoore to Mustang took some getting used to, but she’s enjoying her new school.

“It was a hard year honestly,” she said. “It was definitely a big change. It was different coming from where I was and coming to Mustang – it’s like a huge school, so it was a unique change and I’m thankful for it because it helped me grow closer to God and it completely changed my perspective on things. It grew me as a person.”

Carl Albert boys claim first track crown since 2018

The Carl Albert boys had a strong start Friday and broke the Class 5A state meet record in the 4x200, but they knew another long day awaited them at Western Heights.

“Our coaches, our kids, they just understood when they got back on the bus we had a really good Day 1, but it wasn’t done yet,” Carl Albert coach Cameron Couch said.

The Titans can now rest easy.

Because for the fourth time in school history, their boys track team is a state champion.

Carl Albert edged Tulsa Lincoln Christian 89.17-85 for the Class 5A title.

The Titans finished the meet with a key win in the 4x400 as junior Byron Stubbs, senior Casey Baker, junior Noah Darnell and junior Trystan Haynes claimed the title in 3:19.06. Along with that, junior Christian Oku, Haynes, Stubbs and junior Deontra Dukes won the 4x100 in 41.51.

Haynes, who recently committed to OU football, also claimed an individual title Saturday as he won the 400 in 47.24. He had a close battle with Classen SAS star and Tulsa football signee Elijah Green, who finished in 47.32 and was the Class 4A champion in the event last year.

“Elijah came down to our place a couple of weeks ago and he beat me, so just coming into it I knew it was going to be a good race,” Haynes said. “I just got out fast, just tried to maintain it throughout the race and then had to end it. It was just a dog fight.”

As Haynes and Green hit the final stretch, Haynes had to dig deep if he was going to be victorious.

“He was in front of me for a second, but just coming through that home stretch I knew that I had to kick it and just try to be faster,” Haynes said. “Give it everything I got because I know that this is going to be one of my last track meets.”

Haynes played a big role in Carl Albert football winning the title in the fall. He was just as valuable — if not more — in track.

“This is my family,” he said. “They’ve been my family for a long time. Just being able to go out here and beat all the other 5A teams after how close we were last year to it, it just means the world to all of us.”
