City set for week of events for D-Day anniversary
A week of events have been planned in Worcester leading up to and after the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings on 6 June.
The schedule arranged by Worcester City Council includes the lighting of a beacon at Fort Royal Park.
The week will also include displays at the Guildhall and choir and brass band performances.
The council's armed forces' champion Pat Agar urged people in the city to take part to "commemorate a significant moment in history 80 years on".
On 6 June 1944, Allied forces landed across five beaches in northern France, the largest amphibious invasion in military history.
Worcester's week of remembrance begins on 1 June at the Guildhall.
On the day itself, commemorations will begin at 09.15 BST in Cathedral Square with the raising of the flag and standards at Cathedral Island.
Pupils from Tudor Grange Academy and Tudor Grange Academy Perdiswell will perform the school's poem in period costume from 11:00 BST.
In the evening there will be a commemoration event from 19:00 BST at Fort Royal Park.
The Last Post will be played before the Lord Lieutenant lights a beacon at 21:15 BST.
For those unable to make the commemorations at the park, there will be an event at Cathedral Square on 8 June.
A service of remembrance for the Worcestershire Regiment will also be held at Gheluvelt Park from 10:30 BST on 22 June.
