City of Albuquerque calls for foster parents for special needs animals

May 23—The City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department is looking for foster parents and pet parents to provide homes for animals with special needs, according to a news release.

The release said in 2023, the department it took in more than 5,000 animals, 3,257 kittens and 2,136 puppies.

"The 2024 kitten season is here and we are expecting even more," the release said.

Foster parent responsibilities include:

Helping animals recover from illness or injuryCaring for new animal mothers and their littersTaking care of newborn puppies and kittensProviding a quality of life for elderly animals who need extra careBottle feeding animals without mothersSocializing dogs and cats who are learning good behaviors for their forever homes

The news release added the department offers once a month introduction classes about the program and caring for bottle-fed kittens and puppies. Foster parents will also receive food and supplies for the animals.
