Cindy McCain eyed for plum ambassador gig in Biden administration

President Biden is getting ready to unveil the names of U.S. ambassadors to key embassy postings, and Cindy McCain is on the list.

The widow of the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is in line to be named envoy to the World Food Program, a post that is based in Rome, Politico reported.

Cindy McCain, 66, is reportedly undergoing a background check for the post and will likely be named along with several other appointees this month.

McCain, a lifelong Republican, famously broke party lines in 2020 by endorsing Democrat Biden for president in a rebuke of President Donald Trump by the widow of the GOP’s 2008 nominee.

“I decided to take a stand, and hopefully other people will see the same thing. Other women particularly,” McCain said. “You may have to step out of your comfort zone a little bit, but Biden is by far the best candidate in the race.”

Cindy McCain cited the decadeslong friendship between her family and Bidens and their bond as the parents of children serving in the military.

McCain’s support was instrumental in Biden’s appeal to Republicans and helped give the former vice president a win in Arizona. Biden was the first Democratic presidential candidate to capture the state since 1996.

Subsequently, the Arizona Republican Party censured McCain, former Sen. Jeff Flake and Gov. Doug Ducey for their collective disloyalty to Trump.

John McCain famously despised Trump and denounced him as a political con man. They clashed over politics too, especially after then-Sen. McCain famously torpedoed GOP effort to repeal the Obamacare health plan.

Trump regularly went out of his way to trash John McCain, even after his death from brain cancer in 2018.
