Cinco de Mayo events happening in the Upstate: What to know about festivities

Cinco de Mayo festivities are planned this weekend with vibrant celebrations, delicious cuisine, and cultural awareness all to honor Mexican heritage.

Celebrated on May 5, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army's victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

Check out these festivities in the Upstate.

Willy de Mayo is back on May 5. Cinco de Mayo falls on that day. Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration day of Mexican culture and heritage. Willy Taco in Spartanburg will be honoring the day will food and fun. These will be two margaritas on the menu: Super fresh margarita made of tequila blanco, fresh lime, agave, and salt, the other is a blueberry lemonade, tequila blanco, fresh blueberry puree, lemon juice, agave, and lemon sugar rim.

Mezcal's Fiesta Festival

Mezcal Taberna Mexicana is bringing back its annual Cinco de Mayo celebration this year, located in Barnet Park, 248 East Street John St., in Spartanburg.

Celebrate Mexican culture with delicious food, traditional dances, children's activities, and more. International and local talents, including Kevin Ortiz, Jenny López, and Sonora Dinamita, will perform.

Be aware that road closures will occur temporarily for the event:

  • Converse Street from St. John Street to Silver Hill

  • Littlejohn Circle from Dean Street to Silver Hill

Mezcal's Fiesta Festival will be on Saturday, noon-10:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 and are available for purchase on EventBrite.

Cinco de Mayo Fiesta at Saluda Lake

Saluda Lake Landing, 605 Motor Boat Club Rd., in Greenville, has plans for a fun and festive Cinco de Mayo with a weekend of lakeside celebration.

Tailored for all ages, the celebration features piñata smashing, face painting, games, colorful attire, and food trucks.

Saluda Lake Landing's free Cinco de Mayo event will be Saturday and Sunday, 2-7 p.m.

Cinco De Mayo Celebration at Hoppin' GVL

This celebration at Hoppin' GVL, 120 N. Markley St., Suite 202, in Greenville, will have you dancing the night away. Indulge in a variety of handcrafted drinks and dance until your feet hurt at this Hoppin' celebration.

Hoppin' GVL's celebration is Sunday, noon-10 p.m. Free Lunazul Tequila tasting for the first 100 customers of legal drinking age. Tastings are from 1-3 p.m., and a DJ performs from 1-5 p.m. There also will be drink specials and food trucks.

Cinco de Mayo at The Local Uptown

Bring your friends and family to this festive evening at The Local Uptown, 301 N. McDuffie St., in Anderson. On Saturday, celebrate Cinco de Mayo with drink and food specials and a lot of festivity fun.

The Local Uptown's Cinco de Mayo event is noon-2 a.m.
