Chuck E. Cheese under fire after mascot apparently ignores Black toddler angling for a high-five

Chuck E. Cheese is facing social-media blowback after an irate mom posted a clip of the kiddie restaurant chain’s mascot high-fiving white kids and ignoring the mother’s 2-year-old Black daughter, who is dancing at the costumed character’s feet, vying for attention.

“On July 30 at Chuck E Cheese in Wayne, NJ, my 2yo was racially discriminated against,” Twitter user belllahijabi posted on the platform. “As you can see, he gives all of the yt kids hi-5s & PURPOSELY ignored my black baby. When confronted, he ignored me as well.”

The post, captioned, “Did he just…..?” has received 3.4 million views and been retweeted more than 32,000 times.

Chuck E. Cheese issued a statement thanking the mother for bringing it to the company’s attention while also .

“As home to millions of families and kids every year that celebrate the big and small milestones, including fun, our goal is to create an inclusive experience for children and parents of all ages, races, ethnicities, religious backgrounds and learning differences,” Chuck E. Cheese told News 12 New Jersey on Monday. “Our mission is to provide a fun and a safe place, and all cast members are trained to ensure that we live up to this promise.”

It was not clear what if any action the company would take as a result. The Daily News has reached out to Chuck E. Cheese.

This is the second such incident in as many months. In July, Sesame Place and licensing parent nonprofit Sesame Workshop came under fire after two 6 year-old girls were apparently snubbed by the Rosita character as she breezed by their outstretched hands at a parade in the children’s park outside Philadelphia.

While Sesame Place and Sesame Workshop apologized and outlined trainings meant to improve interaction, the girls’ family was not satisfied with the response and has filed a $25 million suit against Sesame Place alleging racial bias, along with other families who say they were similarly treated.
