Chromebook computers are now available from the Kansas City Public Library

Kansas City residents now have access to Chromebook computers through the Kansas City Public Library. Anyone age 13 and older with a library card can check out one of these devices for free for 21 days at a time.

The computers are intended to help expand access to internet services in Kansas City. Each Chromebook has built-in WiFi internet and 4G LTE mobile data, meaning that you can use it almost anywhere, even if you don’t have internet at home.

How do I reserve and check out a Chromebook?

The Kansas City Public Library has 856 Chromebook computers available for residents to check out. You can place a hold on one through the library’s online catalog. When you place your hold, you can select the library branch where you would like to pick up the computer.

You can also ask to check out a Chromebook at the customer service desk of any library branch. The computer comes with a charging cord, a carrying case and instructions.

How long can I keep the Chromebook?

The checkout period for these computers is 21 days with no renewals. Only one computer checkout at a time is allowed per person. However, after you return your Chromebook you can check out another one immediately, or place another hold for when one becomes available.

If you lose or damage a Chromebook while you have it checked out, you will have to pay the replacement fee of $100.

The computers have a Wi-Fi connection and do not need to have a Wi-Fi at home to use.

What can I use the Chromebook for?

The computers are intended to be used however you like: to browse the internet, apply for jobs, do homework, watch movies and more.

Library staff cannot see what you are using the Chromebooks for. All data is deleted whenever the computers are logged out, turned off or returned to the library. That means it’s a good idea to save your work to a cloud or web-based platform like Google Drive so you can access it again later from another computer.

Why is the library offering these computers to check out?

The Chromebook computers are the latest addition to the library’s Tech To Go program, which aims to connect Kansas City residents with useful technology. The program also offers portable WiFi hotspots for those with no access to internet service.

According to the Urban League of Kansas City’s State of Black Kansas City report, an average of 14% of households in the metro did not have internet access in 2021. The new inventory of computers was purchased using a grant from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to help improve this access.
