Christopher Meloni had some heartbreaking news to share ahead of the holidays.

On Saturday, Dec. 23, the Law & Order: Organized Crime star shared with his social media followers that he was mourning a loss in his family. Alongside a photo of his late loved one, Meloni, 62, wrote, "My cousin passed yesterday. He was 63 and truly like a brother to me."

His tribute continued, "Big man, big smile, massive curiosity. He sweat lodged, ran eco-challenge races, polar bear plunged at night. He’d be a vegan for years and then switch it up and try a paleo diet. He was a diver, kayaker, and mountain climber. He was never without a book in his hand, a joke on his lips, or an interesting thought in his head."

After describing his cousin as a "unique spirit," the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit alum added, "I loved him and will miss him deeply. #SafepassageCuz."

Many famous friends and fans have since expressed their condolences to Meloni in the comments of his update. Fellow Law & Order star Elisabeth Röhm wrote in response, "I’m so sorry, Chris 💔❤️‍🩹." Longtime SVU co-star BD Wong showed his subtle support by liking the image.

BoJack Horseman star Amy Sedaris added, "Oh I'm so sorry❤️❤️❤️."

Comedian Anjelah Johnson-Reyes expressed, "Sounds like an incredible man. So sorry for your loss. 💔"

Even singer Debbie Gibson noted, "So sorry for your loss ❤️."

Meloni's update didn't share any specifics surrounding his late family member's cause of death.
