Last June, Denmark national team member Christian Eriksen collapsed on the field in the middle of a Euro 2020 match, making for one of the most frightening moments in sports in 2021. Thankfully, the medical team was able to treat him for on the pitch and stop a tragedy from taking place on that day in Copenhagan.

Eriksen hasn’t played since that fateful day in last June. But on Tuesday, he shared a brief snippet about what his intentions are for his future in the sport.

In an interview with Danish TV, Eriksen revealed that he hopes to return to action and play again for Denmark’s national team. He brought up playing for his home country in the 2022 World Cup, set to take place later this year in Qatar.

“My goal is to play in the World Cup in Qatar. I want to play. That’s been my mindset all along. It’s a goal, a dream,” Eriksen said, in a clip posted on his Twitter account. “Whether I’ll be picked is another thing, but it’s my dream to come back.”

According to BBC, Eriksen, 29, had an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator fitted following his health scare this past June. Players are banned from having such devices in Italian leagues, so Serie A club Inter Milan decided to terminate its contract with the talented midfield in December.

However, Eriksen explained that he’s still in fantastic shape. He hopes to prove that by returning to a different club and then to Denmark’s national team.

“I don’t feel any different. Physically, I’m back in top shape… so until then I’m just going to play football and prove that I’m back at the same level,” Eriksen continued. “Again, it’s up to the manager to assess my level, but my heart is not an obstacle.”

In a separate snippet of the interview, Eriksen thanked his fans worldwide for their fervent support since last June.

“It was amazing that so many people felt a need to write or send flowers. It had an impact on so many people – and they felt a need to let me and my family know. That makes me very happy,” the 29-year-old midfielder said.

“At the hospital, they kept saying I’d received more and more flowers. It was weird because I didn’t expect people to send flowers because I’d died for five minutes. It was quite extraordinary, but it was very nice of everyone – and it’s been a big help to me to receive all those best wishes.”

“I’ve thanked people I’ve met in person. I’ve thanked the doctors, my team mates and their families in person, Eriksen continued. “But to all the fans who’ve sent thousands of letters and emails and flowers – or who’ve come up to me on the street both in Italy and Denmark – I thank them all for the support I got from around the world that helped me through this.”
