Chris Pine has shared his reaction to the news that a fourth Star Trek film is still in development.

Speaking in an interview with Business Insider, the Dungeons & Dragons star revealed that he was surprised by the news that The Flight Attendant creator Steve Yockey had joined the project as a new screenwriter (via Variety).

"There was something in the news of a new writer coming on board. I thought there was already a script, but I guess I was wrong, or they decided to pivot," he said.

When asked if he would ever consider reprising his role as Captain James T. Kirk for the films, the actor added: "I honestly don't know. As it's always been with Trek, I just wait and see."

Pine first starred as Captain Kirk (originally played by William Shatner) in 2009's Star Trek, before reprising the role for 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond (2016).

A follow-up for Star Trek Beyond has reportedly been in the works since the film's release nearly eight years ago, but it has since faced numerous setbacks.

Director Matt Shakman departed the project in August 2022, causing Paramount to delay the film indefinitely and removing it from their release calendar. Screenwriter Lindsey Anderson Beer subsequently left the movie in September 2023 in order to direct Pet Sematary: Bloodlines.

However, Beer insisted that a fourth Star Trek was "still on the tracks" despite lengthy delays, with Variety's report in March confirming that Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot were still involved in the film.

Paramount is yet to confirm any further details about the film, however it's likely that Pine will be returning for the fourth instalment alongside fellow stars Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldaña (Uhura), Karl Urban (Bones), John Cho (Sulu) and Simon Pegg (Scotty).
