Chocolate shop offering a ‘little piece of France’ is South Carolina’s best, Yelp says

If you have a sweet tooth, the tourist hot spot of Charleston might have you covered.

That’s because the city is home to the best chocolate shop in South Carolina, a new report finds.

Christophe Artisan Chocolatier-Pâtissier was named the state’s top place to get the treat after the restaurant review website Yelp studied businesses listed as chocolate shops. Then, it “ranked those spots using a number of factors, including the total volume and ratings of reviews,” results published in June show.

The findings were released ahead of World Chocolate Day, which falls on July 7. But chocolate lovers have raved about the Charleston shop all year long.

On Yelp, fans of Christophe praised the store for serving decadent, melt-in-your-mouth treats, helping it earn more than four out of five stars. Others said the shop’s display case was full of treats that left them craving more.

The shop, located off the popular downtown tourist destination of King Street, said it allows customers to “take home a little piece of France” in the form of chocolates and traditional baked goods, such as croissants and macarons. The business started in 2009 after its namesake Christophe Paume brought his talents to the Lowcountry.

“Paume is a third-generation chocolatier from Toulouse, France,” the shop wrote on its Yelp page. “Christophe first learned to make chocolate and pastries alongside his father and grandfather in the family patissier (pastry) shop.”

These days, Paume’s business sells “hand-painted chocolates, luscious truffles, chocolate sculptures, and corporate logo chocolates,” according to its website. While the shop’s Society Street location earned recognition from Yelp, treats also are sold at a spot in the nearby West Ashley area.

The latest ranking comes on the heels of several other accolades for Charleston-area eateries.

This year, two restaurants in the region ranked among the nation’s best, and others earned spots on a list of “most outstanding” places to eat in the world. And thanks to ratings from out-of-town visitors, Yelp recently named Charleston a top city for food lovers, McClatchy News reported.
