Choco Taco, longtime ice cream favorite, has been discontinued

It’s a not-so-sweet development.

The Choco Taco, a decades-long staple of vending machines and ice cream trucks, has been discontinued, according to an announcement Monday by Unilever-owned Klondike

Among the explanations the company gave to mourning Twitter users — including the likes of Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian and politicians looking to take action — was that some products just weren’t as competitive as other favorites.

A Klondike brand representative said in an emailed statement, Monday, July 25, 2022, that the Choco Taco has been discontinued in both its 1 count and 4 count sizes.

“Unfortunately, the Klondike Choco Taco has been discontinued. We’ve experienced an unprecedented spike in demand across our portfolio and have had to make very tough decisions to ensure availability of our full portfolio nationwide,” tweeted the company.

“We’re very sorry for any disappointment!”

“Would a petition help?!” asked one user.

“That’s sad, what do we have to do to bring it back, boycott all other Klondike products?” suggested another.

The news even caught the attention of politicians, with Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) tweeting: “Tomorrow I am introducing legislation to invoke the Defense Production Act to mandate the continued manufacture of Choco Tacos. Please call your Senator and demand they co-sponsor.”

Ohanian tweeted that he’d “like to buy the rights” to the product “and keep it from melting away from future generations’ childhoods.”

While editor Jack Posobiec dismissed the company’s move as “100% troll marketing” that “will work,” writer Oliver Willis joked that he’d “challenge biden in the primary based solely on his inadequate response to the choco taco cancellation.

“America needs a president who can put our chocolate needs first,” said Willis.
