A child riding a scooter died after being hit by a vehicle in Apex on Monday afternoon.

The collision occurred at 1:05 p.m. in the 1900 block of Woodall Crest Drive, off Apex Barbecue Road, Apex police said.

Though the Apex Police Department did not release the name and age of the child, news outlets reported that the child was 10 years old and a fourth grade student at Combs Magnet Elementary School in Raleigh.

The identity of the driver was not released.

The cause of the collision is still undetermined, according to the Apex Police Department, adding “crash reconstruction” is part of the investigation.

Deputy Chief Mitchell McKinney told The News & Observer Tuesday afternoon that the department plans to update the public with more details about the investigation soon.

The child was taken to a Durham County hospital where they died from their injuries. No one in the vehicle was injured, according to the police department.

Apex mayor addresses traffic safety concerns

After the crash Monday afternoon, Mayor Jacques Gilbert said he visited the Woodall Estates community to offer his condolences and support.

“It is apparent that there are many concerns and questions,” Gilbert said in a statement. “Additional information requests surrounding traffic safety concerns are being researched and will be provided accordingly.”

Gilbert wrote that his focus was to provide “care and support to the family and community members impacted while respecting their privacy during this time.”
