A child is dead and another injured after a stabbing inside an Eastern North Carolina school, police said.

A fight between students was reported at about 7 a.m. at Northside High School in Jacksonville, about 120 miles southeast of Raleigh, according to video from a Sept. 1 news conference.

The Jacksonville Police Department in a news release said a school resource officer responded within 20 seconds. A student was taken into custody, and the injured children were taken to Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune, officials told WITN.

Officials in their news conference released few details about the children’s identities due to them being minors. Police in an email to McClatchy News didn’t confirm whether they were students at the school.

A teacher may have been hurt but not stabbed, police said.

The school was on lockdown before students were dismissed at about 8:45 a.m., according to Barry Collins, superintendent of Onslow County Schools.

Officials said an investigation into the “isolated incident” was ongoing as of about 2:20 p.m.
