Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce picks his favorite plays made by Patrick Mahomes

At his news conference Monday, Chiefs coach Andy Reid was asked — tongue-in-cheek — if he was the inspiration for quarterback Patrick Mahomesbonkers touchdown throw Sunday against the Broncos.

Mahomes was looking one way and flipped the ball to Jerick McKinnon in another direction. It kind of does resemble the way Reid threw a marker in his State Farm commercial with Mahomes.

“Yeah, I think it is,” Reid said with a chuckle. “I’ll tell you that was (a) pretty spectacular play. I think you guys know that, but that was special. He did a nice job. I appreciate the humor there, though.”

Here are the two throws.

That touchdown pass from Mahomes was one of the subjects the Kelce brothers discussed this week on their “New Heights” podcast.

Jason Kelce, the Eagles’ center, then asked Travis Kelce, the Chiefs’ tight end, to name his three favorite plays from Mahomes.

Travis Kelce only mentioned two before they changed subjects, but here is what he said.

“The first one that was my favorite was another Mile High game,” Travis said. “It was his second year playing, so the first year he was starting. He threw that left-handed pass to Tyreek (Hill) on the run. It was like it was the only thing he could think of to do and instinctually he just threw it, as like Von’s tripping him up. So it was like that was one of my favorites.”

“Another one was another throw to Tyreek the same year,” Travis continued. “We were playing the Baltimore Ravens at the house, fourth and 9, fourth quarter, we need a touchdown to take the lead. And I’m talking there are minutes left, like 2 minutes, 3 minutes left, I think. I’m running around and I feel like I am wide ... open, guaranteed first down, like we can move the sticks right here. Pat, I think he’s staring me down, and he absolutely hucks it to the middle of the field. I’m standing there like, ‘No no no no. guarantee it’s right here in front of you. Why are you doing it 40 yards downfield over the middle of the field? Like don’t throw over the middle field late.’

“Like all this is like going through my head and this is before it’s Magic Mahomes, you don’t question what Magic Mahomes does. And I just see everyone going toward the same like area on the field and then Tyreek just coming from left field, takes it, runs around gets an extra like 20 yards on the run after he catches it. And we go on to win that game and it was fourth-and-9, the chances of us winning at that point were very slim.

“And for him to put up that pass at that point in the game and have the cojones to throw to Tyreek Hill downfield, I don’t think percentages are going through his head when he’s playing the game. Like the percentage of this catch being made, you know, stuff like that. He’s just out there seeing his dogs open downfield and hucking it, man.”

It would’ve been fun to hear what Kelce picked as his third favorite play by his quarterback, but those are his two memorable throws.
