Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes shares insights from first workouts with Hollywood Brown

New Chiefs wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown wasted little time in getting to work.

Brown signed with the Chiefs last Monday and then joined quarterback Patrick Mahomes and receiver Rashee Rice for workouts with Mahomes’ trainer, Bobby Stroupe.

Photos and videos were shared on social media, and Mahomes said the thought of documentation made the guys work harder.

“It’s funny because Bobby’s always like, alright we’re building up, we’re not gonna go hard here: 80%,” Mahomes said Friday at the 101 Awards. “And that’s the first rep, and then by rep three, it’s like everybody is going 110%. Especially if they’ve got the cameras out there. They can’t have a picture of you way in the back.”

Mahomes said he knew Brown was fleet of foot, but it’s been eye-opening to see it in person.

That speed isn’t all that Mahomes likes about Brown. His desire to win also impressed Mahomes.

“You see the athleticism, see how springy he is, how fast he is when he’s not even trying to run,” Mahomes said. “Like, we’re talking about 80%, he’s flying. It’s hard for me when Rashee and Hollywood are running. I definitely can see that he’s gonna be able to extend the field.

“I watched a lot of tape on him just from playing similar opponents these last few years and like I said, he’s hungry. He wants to go out there and he wants to make an impact on the game and win a championship and we’ll try to utilize his strengths to do that.”

Rice, who also was at the 101 Awards, believes Brown is going to fit in well with the Chiefs on and off the field.

“He’s got good energy,” Rice said. “When I first met him, it didn’t really seem like it was my first time meeting him. He’s just kind of like a good dude. Easy to be around. So I feel like that’s gonna be easy to be around on the field. That’s gonna help a lot.”

The Chiefs are going for the first-ever threepeat in the Super Bowl era. Brown wasn’t with the Chiefs when they won the previous two Lombardi Trophies, of course, but Mahomes said Brown wants to help continue the championship streak.

“You can tell he wants it. He wants to win,” Mahomes said. “Obviously, he wants to do good. Everybody wants to do good, but you can tell that he wants to be a part of something that’s special. Part of greatness. And we’re trying to build that here and we believe that we’ve started it, but we want to continue it.”

Mahomes then took a playful dig at tight end Travis Kelce, who is 34.

“We still have a young team — other than Trav — and so if we can continue to build this with a lot of people that are hungry and want to win,” Mahomes said, “we think we can keep this thing going.”
