The Chiefs can clinch a postseason spot this weekend, but they’ll need some help

The Chiefs’ rivals in the AFC West spent hundreds of millions of dollars this past offseason in the hopes of knocking the Chiefs from their perch.

That’s according to Yahoo Sports, which noted the multitude of high-profile signings and trades made by the Broncos, Chargers and Raiders. That story included a comment made by Chargers general manager Tom Telesco on “The Pat McAfee Show” in March.

“Our division is unbelievable right now. We’re all chasing Kansas City,” Telesco told McAfee. “Denver makes a move with Russell Wilson. We make a move with Khalil Mack. The Raiders make a move with Davante Adams. Luckily we signed J.C. Jackson. We’re all just trying to keep up with each other and go after Kansas City.”

That mission didn’t just fail, it was a Bay of Pigs type disaster.

The Broncos, 3-9, already have been eliminated in the AFC West race, the Raiders, 5-7, are on the cusp of being knocked out of contention, and the Chargers’ chances are on the brink.

The Chiefs can clinch their seventh straight West title on Sunday.

Here’s what needs to happen: the Chiefs must beat the Broncos in Denver and have the Chargers, 6-6, lose at home to the Dolphins.

That also would give the Chiefs a spot in the postseason for the eighth straight season.

Should the Chiefs beat Denver, they will then watch the “Sunday Night Football” game between the Chargers and Dolphins to see if they can pop the champagne.

Not bad considering the Chiefs traded All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill in the spring and opened the season with an eight-game stretch that was unprecedented in league history.

“I’d tell you, yes, I thought all the AFC West teams bettered themselves,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid told reporters on Monday. “I thought we — which has already been said — had one of the tougher schedules in the league and I’m proud of how the guys have kind of battled through that to get to this point.”
