Yes, Chiefs-Bills play on Sunday afternoon, but it’ll be a nationally televised game

Heading into Sunday’s game, there is one thing Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills fans can agree on (along with other NFL fans): Why aren’t the teams playing on prime time?

The Bills and Chiefs kick off at 3:25 p.m. at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. The decision to have the game start in the afternoon is likely the result of conversations held before the season.

Alan Pergament of the Buffalo News wrote about why the Bills-Chiefs game is not being played at night.

“Months before the season, the NFL asks its broadcast, cable partners and now its streaming partner to request the games it would want the most,” Pergament wrote.

“CBS assuredly made the Bills-Kansas City game one of its biggest requests because it will be a rematch of arguably last season’s most exciting game, the Chiefs’ 42-36 overtime playoff victory led by Patrick Mahomes’ touchdown drive that meant Josh Allen and the Bills offense never saw the field.

“The rematch featuring two of the NFL’s most charismatic and, according to CBS’ Jim Nantz, most likable quarterbacks, will be must-see TV and CBS wanted it on its air.”

CBS got its wish, and although it won’t be in prime time, the entire nation will see the game, which kicks off at 3:25 p.m. It’s the only late-afternoon game on CBS, and the network confirmed every market will see it.

Nantz and Tony Romo will be on the call, with Tracy Wolfson working as the sideline reporter. Nantz spoke of his excitement about the game during a preseason conference call.

“We’ll have the Buffalo game week 6,” Nantz said, “which everybody can’t wait to see.”

While 506Sports.com usually has three NFL broadcast maps, this week there are only two because the Chiefs-Bills game will be seen by everyone.

Here is the map, via 506Sports.com, which shows viewers in Kansas City will see the Ravens-Giants game before the Chiefs play.

This map shows the noon games on CBS (the Giants-Ravens game is in red), and the entire nation will see the Chiefs-Bills contest.
