A Chiefs-Bills AFC Championship Game in Atlanta? Sign me up — but how do I get there? | Opinion

Sorry, Chiefs fans — but a potential AFC Championship Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills sounds enticing.

If the AFC playoff seedings hold true to form, No. 1 seed Kansas City (14-3) could take on No. 2 seed Buffalo (13-3) at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 29 in Atlanta for the right to advance to the Super Bowl, the NFL announced Thursday.

Although the Chiefs earned the AFC’s top seed and secured home field advantage throughout the playoffs, the potential matchup between these two budding rivals would be the only neutral site game in Atlanta should the Bills and Chiefs advance, according to the NFL.

Last week, any hope of a potential AFC Championship Game between the Chiefs and Bills at Arrowhead Stadium was nixed by the NFL.

Why?

Because Buffalo’s Week 17 game at Cincinnati was canceled after Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest during the game. If not for the heroic efforts of an untold number of medical personnel at the game, the 24-year-old Hamlin would probably be dead.

Atlanta is one of my favorite cities in America. The progressive city is known as a mecca for successful Black people and is rich in culture.

A stop for fresh seafood from Spondivits, my favorite eatery there, is a must. Sweet tea. Check. Soul food. Check. Ice cold Coca-Cola. Check. (Sorry, Pepsi product lovers: Despite PepsiCo’s recent expansion down south, you’ll be hard-pressed to find your drink of choice easily in that part of the country.)

I am checking plane ticket prices as I type. Ugh, Southwest Airlines. (You may have heard, the discount airline is in hot water for canceled flights.) Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines could be an option, as is renting a vehicle for the almost 12-hour drive from Kansas City.

But, first things first. The Chiefs and Bills must win their respective postseason games in the coming weeks to make it to the AFC Championship Game. And then we can start making plans for Hotlanta.

Stay tuned.
