Chiefs backup quarterback Chad Henne announces retirement after Super Bowl win

Chad Henne is riding off into the proverbial sunset as a Super Bowl champion.

Henne, the Chiefs backup quarterback, shared in an Instagram post that he is retiring.

“Calling it a career. Capping it off with @budlight and another ring! #superbowlchamps #chiefs,” Henne wrote.

Henne played a big role in the Chiefs’ 27-20 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC Divisional playoff game last month at Arrowhead Stadium. When Patrick Mahomes suffered a high ankle sprain and was temporarily removed from the game to determine the severity of an injury, Henne stepped up big time.

In the second quarter, Henne led a 98-yard touchdown drive that he capped with a touchdown pass to Travis Kelce. Those points proved important as the Chiefs won by a touchdown.

Two years earlier, Henne again took over for the injured Mahomes, this time closing out a playoff win over the Browns. Henne rushed for 12 yards and then threw a pass to Tyreek Hill on a fourth-down play that helped the Chiefs secure the victory.

In four seasons with the Chiefs, Henne appeared in 11 regular-season games and made one start. He completed 69.5% of his passes with a pair of touchdown throws and no interceptions. He also was part of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LIV championship team.

Henne, 37, played 13 seasons in the NFL with the Chiefs, Jaguars and Dolphins.
