'Chicago P.D.'s Adam Ruzek Puts a Ring on Kim Burgess But Will There Be a Wedding This Season?

Will the third time be the charm? Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) have been on-again, off-again for several seasons on Chicago P.D. But on tonight’s “Safe Harbor” episode, they finally seem to have their personal life together—parenting and all— and at the end of the hour, Ruzek pops the question.

“They both almost died having been shot at and bled out, so I think that changes a person,” Squerciati tells Parade why she thinks their relationship might work this time around. “They’ve both struggled with the aftermath of that and come through it. They live together, they’ve been through everything together, engagements, a child, the kidnapping of a child, and I think that there is no better couple. They just know each other, and they know how difficult it’s been for each other. They’re beyond words almost.”

It was a quiet proposal, almost offhand, when Ruzek walked over to his chest of drawers, opened the top drawer and pulled out the engagement ring. He doesn’t even say, “I love you,” so it’s far from the romantic popping of the question most women hope for.

“That’s funny, I feel like that’s a question I’ll be asked on X [formerly Twitter] a lot,” Squerciati says. “I think in the moment she was like, ‘This is what I need,’ and he’s like, ‘I can give that to you.’ I think when she goes to sleep and wakes up in the morning, she’s like, ‘I’m going to need some flowers and get dressed up and we’re doing it at a nice restaurant tonight.’ At that moment, it was perfect, but yeah, I think she’s going to need to post this [she shows off the engagement ring] on Instagram. I feel like she’s going to post it for sure.”

Unlike her Intelligence Unit teammate, Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), who had a quicky wedding when Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) insisted they tie the knot immediately, Kim wants the whole nine yards.

“One hundred percent, she’s not Hailey Upton, she wants the dress and the flowers, 100 percent, yes,” Squerciati says.

But it isn’t likely we will see it on screen this season.

“We’re really turning into a really interesting part of the season about a serial killer, that I think we’re going to tap into old Voight [Jason Beghe] and the rage in the cage,” Squerciati teases an upcoming storyline. “I think some of the fans are really hungry for that, so I think that’s where we’re going. I don’t think a wedding’s this season; I’m not putting it past next season.”

As mentioned, the Intelligence Unit has already had a married couple working together, so Voight is okay with that. But Squerciati says they are three episodes past the engagement, and no one’s mentioned it.

“I was like, ‘Maybe they don’t know, maybe we’re keeping it secret, or maybe they don’t like me?’ And then I got in my head, I’m like, ‘Why hasn’t anybody said anything or sent me flowers?’ [Then I remembered] Atwater [LaRoyce Hawkins] says to Torres [Benjamin Levy Aguilar] in his big episode, ‘They got engaged,’ so they do know. I feel like they should throw me a party. We’ll see.”

Chicago P.D. airs Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
