Cher Still Fighting for Conservatorship of Son Elijah Blue

Elijah Blue and Cher

Cher is a living legend known for her decades-long music and film career, but she’s also a mom of two, having welcomed a son during each of her marriages.

“I always, always wanted to be a mother,” Cher said during a 2004 episode of Dr. Phil. “I’m proud of, in this lifetime, they both have got great morals. They tell the truth, they root for the underdog, they have respect for people. The things that my mom made me think were the most important things, my children have them.”

Cher later revealed that she suffered three miscarriages before welcoming her eldest son, Chaz, in 1969. The first one happened when she was just 18 years old, during her relationship with first husband Sonny Bono. "I was alone in our house," she tweeted in 2022. "[Sonny] came home & I was sobbing, & rocking on our floor."

When Cher conceived Chaz, her doctor put her on bed rest, so she used the opportunity to learn some new skills. “I had to lay in bed for the first three months, and then I had to just stay in the house,” she recalled on Dr. Phil. “So I learned how to play pool and learned French, so it wasn’t a total loss. And then after I became a mother I thought, ‘What have I been doing all this time? What did I do before I did this?’”

Cher shares her eldest son, Chaz, with first husband Sonny Bono. Cher and Bono met at a party in 1962 when Cher was 16 and Bono was 28. According to Cher, Bono was initially interested in her friend. “I was with my girlfriend, who was really beautiful,” she recalled in the 2018 SiriusXM show The Cher Show: Making the Musical. “He liked her so he didn’t really say anything to me. He was like, ‘Oh, yeah, kid.’”

They soon became roommates by coincidence: Bono was moving in next door to Cher just as she was getting kicked out of her apartment. They eventually started dating and tied the knot in 1964 (when Cher was 18). By the following year, they had started performing together as Sonny & Cher, and in 1971, they began hosting The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour.

Offstage, however, their marriage was falling apart, and they separated in 1974. “He didn't want me to grow up or have any freedom,” Cher said in a 2010 interview with Parade. “I wasn't allowed to do anything except work. We worked more than we lived.”

Despite their split, the duo reunited for The Sonny and Cher Show, which aired from 1976 to 1977. Bono died in 1998 at age 62 after he was injured in a skiing accident. Cher delivered a eulogy at his funeral.

Four days after finalizing her divorce from Sonny Bono in 1975, Cher married her second husband, Gregg Allman. She then filed for divorce nine days later, but the couple reconciled and stayed married until 1979. The pair collaborated on the duet album Two the Hard Way in 1977, but it was a commercial (and critical) failure, and it was never reissued on CD or made available via streaming services.

Cher later said that Allman’s struggles with substance abuse damaged their relationship. “It’s hard to have a marriage with someone who's doing drugs,” she told the Daily Mail in 2018. “Drugs and I were just never meant to be together. I thought it was stupid and still do. I saw too many people where it ruined their lives. It ruined Gregory's life.”

Allman died of complications from liver cancer in 2017 at age 69.

Both of Cher’s sons have worked in music, with Chaz Bono recording one album with the band Ceremony in 1993. Elijah Blue Allman, meanwhile, has released three albums with his band Deadsy. He also recorded a cover of “Crimson and Clover” with his mom in 1999.

What happened with Cher and her son Elijah Blue?

Cher and her youngest son, Elijah Blue, have had a tumultuous relationship over the past several years. Cher filed for a temporary conservatorship over Elijah Blue in December 2023, claiming in court documents that her son was “substantially unable to manage his own financial resources due to severe mental health and substance abuse issues.” She further alleged that Elijah’s wife, Marieangela King, is not fit to be his conservator because the duo’s “tumultuous relationship has been marked by a cycle of drug addiction and mental health crises.”

In January 2024, a judge denied Cher’s request but will reconsider a permanent conservatorship at a hearing later this year. The judge noted that Elijah had “remained drug-free” after submitting multiple drug tests and had been managing his finances.

Most recently, on Feb. 22, the "If I Could Turn Back Time" singer moved to subpoena Elijah’s medical records to bolster her case. But Elijah pushed back, asking the court to either reject the subpoena or place his records under a protective order “in an effort to protect” his “physician-patient privileged and psychotherapist-patient privileged information.”

Prior to this latest development in his conservatorship case, Elijah filed to dismiss his divorce petition after reconciling with King, whom he originally split from in late 2021.
